Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 8 min read

Turning Earth runs three-hour pottery tasters. City Lit lists one-day printmaking workshops at £149 and pottery courses from about £599. Mary Ward Centre lists 12-week life drawing at £424, or £240 concession. Morley College runs ceramics in North Kensington.

Three ways in: drop-in, taster, or a course

Classes in London come in roughly three shapes,. A drop-in is a single session you pay for on the day, with no commitment beyond that evening. A taster is a single, booked session designed for people who have never tried the craft. A course runs over several weeks, or a weekend, and is priced for the whole run.

Drop-ins are almost all life drawing. Tasters are most common for pottery, where a wheel and a kiln make it hard to try at home. Courses are where the adult education colleges come in: City Lit, Morley College and the Mary Ward Centre each publish full-fee and concession prices, and each sells places for a whole term or a fixed run of weeks rather than single nights.

Every price below comes from the organiser's own listing as read on 14 October 2026. Prices on community-run drop-ins in particular change often and some listings for the same group disagree, so the figures are a guide to the range rather than a promise.

Drop-in life drawing: from about £11 a session

Life drawing sessions follow a common pattern: a clothed or nude model holds a series of poses, short ones first, longer ones later, while everyone draws. No one is expected to have drawn before. The groups below describe themselves as welcoming all abilities, and none asks you to show your work.

London Life Drawing runs sessions across several venues. Its Meetup page lists Monday evenings at Sweet Thursday Pizza on Southgate Road in Dalston, Tuesdays at The Bath House on Eastway in Hackney Wick, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at the Garrett Centre on Mansford Street in Bethnal Green, and Wednesdays at Topolski Studio on the South Bank. It gives £13 per evening for most in-person classes, £11 for the Friday long pose, £26 for a Saturday four-hour long pose and £8 online. It says materials are provided at no extra cost, and that tea and snacks or a bar are available at every session.

The same page says drop-ins and late arrivals are welcome, and that you can either pay on the night or book in advance through Bookwhen, except at Topolski Studio, which must be booked through Bookwhen. It also sells multi-session passes that it says never expire, though the pass prices differ between its own listings, from £42.50 to £52.50 for five sessions, so check the current figure before buying.

A separate group listed on Meetup as London Bridge Life Drawing meets on Wednesdays at 7pm in the TRA Community Hall at Simla House, Weston Street, SE1, on the Kipling Estate. Its listing gives £14 per session, or £12 for students, drop-in only, paid on the night by cash or card. It says chairs and drawing boards are provided but you should bring your own drawing materials, and each session has two hours of poses lasting from 2 to 25 minutes.

Royal Drawing School: booked drop-ins and short courses

Royal Drawing School is a step more formal. Its site lists in-person 5-week and 1-week courses, single classes of one to four hours or a full day, and online classes, with in-person teaching at its Shoreditch studios as well as in museums, galleries, parks and urban spaces.

Its short-course FAQ sets out the rules plainly. Courses can be booked only through the website and must be paid in full; places cannot be held. Drop-in classes must be booked online before the session, booking opens on the Monday of that week, and there are no refunds for drop-ins. Adult short courses are for people aged 18 and over. For studio courses it says easels, boards, charcoal, newsprint and masking tape are provided, with a paper fee added at booking.

The school publishes an unusually detailed concession list for term-time courses, single classes and 5- and 10-week courses. It includes 50% off for people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance or disability benefits, 20% off most courses for NHS staff, 10% off for over-60s, and 25% off Shoreditch courses for Tower Hamlets and Hackney residents. It asks you to email proof and wait for confirmation before booking. The concessions do not apply to one-week courses or the three-month Drawing Intensive.

Pottery tasters and studio time

Turning Earth runs pottery studios in Hoxton, Leyton and Highgate, and teaches at Camden Art Centre. Its taster page describes a three-hour, tutor-led session in a small group, with tuition, clay and tools included. You can choose one piece to glaze and fire for £5, which it says is ready about four weeks later; you do not have to keep anything you make. Its home page lists the taster from £85.

Two of its rules are worth knowing before booking with someone else. Checkout allows up to two bookings at once, which suits a pair. And fees are non-refundable once booked: if you cannot attend, the studio says it will try to find a replacement and refund you if it does, but that is not guaranteed. When the page was read, no upcoming taster dates were showing and there was a form to be told when new ones are released.

For anyone who already throws, Turning Earth lists an Open-Studio Pass at its Leyton studio, five three-hour sessions for £175 or ten for £330. Morley College's ceramics listing includes a pay-as-you-go studio time course at its North Kensington campus, though the listing page does not give its price.

City Lit: one-day workshops and term courses in Holborn

City Lit was founded by the London County Council in 1919 and has been on Keeley Street, Holborn, since 2005, according to Wikipedia. It lists 45 ceramics and sculpture courses, 64 drawing courses and 38 printmaking courses, each with three prices: full, senior and concession.

Printmaking is the easiest place to try a single day. Its listing shows Explore printmaking, a one-day workshop introducing monoprinting, relief and screen printing, from Thursday 29 October 2026 at £149, and T-shirt screen printing in a day and Cyanotype printmaking in a day also at £149. One-day workshops carry the same price at every tier. Printmaking for beginners, from 2 December 2026, is listed at £249 full, £199 senior and £162 concession.

Pottery is sold as longer courses. Pottery for beginners, starting Saturday 31 October 2026, and a Six day taster course in ceramics, starting Sunday 10 January 2027, are both listed at £649 full, £519 senior and £422 concession. Pottery on Saturdays, for all levels, is listed at £599.

For life drawing, Life drawing after work starts Monday 23 November 2026 at £179 at every tier, and Life drawing for beginners starts Thursday 14 January 2027 at £249 full, £199 senior and £162 concession. The listing pages do not state who qualifies for the senior or concession rate; City Lit points to its help centre for booking and refund rules, which could not be read for this guide.

Morley College and the Mary Ward Centre

Morley College opened in 1889 and merged with Kensington and Chelsea College in 2020, according to Wikipedia. Its own site gives three addresses: the Waterloo Centre for Adult Education at 61 Westminster Bridge Road, SE1, the Chelsea Centre on Hortensia Road, SW10, and the North Kensington Centre for Skills on Wornington Road, W10. Its home page said places were still available on adult and short courses, and invited people to come into college to enrol.

Its ceramics listing shows adult short courses at North Kensington, including Thursday Evening Ceramics: Beginners and Mixed Level. Its painting and drawing listing shows Drawing for Beginners and The Drawing Course for Beginners at Waterloo. Neither listing page shows prices or lengths, so check each course page before planning around one.

The Mary Ward Centre began in Bloomsbury in 1890, spent 1982 to 2023 at Queen Square, and started teaching from Stratford High Street in September 2023, according to Wikipedia. Its site gives the address as 275-285 High Street, Stratford, E15 2TF. Its life drawing listing shows weekly three-hour classes on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons, 12 weeks at £424 full fee or £240 concession, and 11 weeks at £396 or £228. It also listed a Weekend Ceramics Workshop on Saturday 17 October 2026, 10:00 to 17:00, without a price on the page read.

Going to a class with someone

A drop-in suits a first meeting because neither of you is committed beyond the evening, the cost is low, and there is a natural break for talking. Life drawing sessions are largely silent while the model is posing, so expect to talk before, at the break and afterwards rather than during.

A taster suits a second or third date, and it needs booking ahead. Courses are a bigger commitment: a term at a college means the same evening every week for up to 12 weeks, and the full fee is usually paid up front. If two people want to take one together, check whether either of you qualifies for a concession, because the gap between full and concession fees at City Lit and the Mary Ward Centre is large.

Before you go

  • Check the date on the listing: community drop-in prices change, and some groups show different prices on different pages.
  • Royal Drawing School drop-ins must be booked online before the session and are not refundable; booking opens on the Monday of that week.
  • Turning Earth taster fees are non-refundable once booked, and checkout allows up to two bookings at once.
  • Ask whether materials are provided: London Life Drawing supplies them, the London Bridge group asks you to bring your own.
  • For college courses, check the concession rules on the college's own fees page before paying the full fee.
