Cookery Classes and Food Workshops in London: Prices, Times and Rules

Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 8 min read

For a two-hour evening, Jamie Oliver Cookery School lists Pasta Master at £75 a person and Borough Kitchen runs 6.30–9.30pm classes from £110. Bread Ahead lists two-hour evening workshops and three-hour half days. Leiths runs one-day Culinary Masterclasses in Shepherd's Bush. Cookery School at Little Portland Street says it has closed. Cancellation rules differ widely; Bread Ahead allows no refunds within three months.

The short version

  • Cookery School at Little Portland Street: its own website now says it has had to close, so older guides recommending it are out of date.
  • Leiths Culinary School (16-20 Wendell Road, W12) runs one-day Culinary Masterclasses such as Knife Skills and Pasta Skills, 10am to about 2.30pm, with dates listed at £175 and 20% off when two places are booked together.
  • Jamie Oliver Cookery School (Islington and Oxford Street) lists classes from £60 to £190; Pasta Master is £75, two hours including eating, and you cook in pairs.
  • Borough Kitchen teaches evening classes, 18:30 to 21:30, at Battersea Power Station, Chiswick, Hampstead and Islington, with listed prices of £110 and £129. Its Borough Market shop does not teach.
  • Bread Ahead lists two-hour evening workshops and three-hour half days. Its terms allow no refund or date change within three months of the class, and recipes cannot be adapted for dietary needs.
  • Every price, time and rule here comes from the school's own pages, checked 14 October 2026. Prices and dates move, so confirm when booking.

Why a class can work for a date, and what to check first

A cookery class gives two people a shared task, a fixed end time and something to eat at the end. That suits some early dates well: the conversation has a prompt, and nobody has to fill silence over a menu. It also costs more than a drink and is usually booked well ahead, which makes it a better fit for a second or third date than a first meeting with someone you have only messaged.

Before booking two places, check four things on the school's own page: the price per person, how long the session really lasts, what the school can and cannot do about allergies and diets, and what happens if one of you has to cancel. Those four vary more between schools than the menus do, and the rules below show how far apart they are.

A correction first: Cookery School at Little Portland Street

Cookery School at Little Portland Street in central London appears in many older lists of London classes. Its own website now carries a notice saying that, due to unforeseen circumstances, it has had to close. The same page still shows class and course links and a spring sale banner, so it is easy to misread at a glance.

The site gives no information about refunds for existing bookings. If you hold a booking or a voucher, contact the school directly; do not rely on a third-party listing that may not have caught up with the closure.

Leiths: one-day masterclasses in Shepherd's Bush

Leiths Culinary School is at 16-20 Wendell Road, London W12 9RT, according to its own site. Alongside its professional training, it runs Culinary Masterclasses: one-day, hands-on classes. The ones listed are Knife Skills, Pasta Skills, Fish Skills, Bakery Skills and Pastry Skills, and the masterclass page also mentions a seasonal produce workshop and an occasional evening guest series.

The Pasta Skills and Knife Skills pages give the same timetable: arrival from 9.30am, class from 10am, cooking ends around 1.45pm and the day ends at 2.30pm. Included are refreshments on arrival, a recipe booklet, ingredients weighed out in advance, a lunch you have made yourselves, and the washing up. Leiths asks you to wear long trousers, a long-sleeved top and closed-toe flat shoes, and to bring containers to take food home.

On price, both pages show £210 including VAT in the heading but list each upcoming date at £175. The page does not explain the difference, so check the figure at checkout. Booking two places together on any Culinary Masterclass gets 20% off, which matters if you are going as a pair. Listed upcoming Pasta Skills dates include 30 October and 27 November 2026; the 7 November 2026 Knife Skills date shows as sold out.

On diets, Leiths says it is happy to make adjustments where possible and links to an allergies and dietary restrictions policy. Its cancellation terms sit in a Short Course Terms and Conditions PDF linked from its terms page; that document was not checked for this guide, so read it before you book.

Jamie Oliver Cookery School: short evening and daytime classes

Jamie Oliver Cookery School lists London classes at Oxford Street and Islington; its footer gives the Islington site as 160 Holloway Road, N7 8DD. The class listing gives a price range of £60 to £190, with most standard classes at £60 or £75, and durations tagged from 90 minutes to a full day. Classes cover pasta and Italian, a long list of world cuisines, baking, knife skills, meat and fish, and guest-chef sessions.

Pasta Master is the simplest comparison point: £75 a person, two hours including cooking and eating, at both London sites. You work in pairs, so a couple books together naturally; a single booker may be paired with someone else. The class is 18+, with 15 to 17 year olds allowed if an adult also takes part. There are no spectators.

On diets, the Pasta Master page says it can be adapted for vegan and vegetarian diets but is not suitable for gluten-free diets. The school's terms say you must declare allergies and dietary needs when booking and confirm them on arrival, that ingredients may be prepared on shared equipment with common allergens, and that you are responsible for avoiding your allergens.

Cancellation terms for public classes are among the most flexible here: at least 7 days' notice gets a full refund or free rescheduling; under 7 days a 50% rescheduling fee may apply; within 48 hours a class cannot be moved or cancelled. Arrive at least 10 minutes early. The terms say late arrivals are not admitted and are not refunded.

Borough Kitchen: evening classes in four shops

Borough Kitchen, a cookware retailer, runs cook school classes in four of its London stores: Battersea Power Station (40 Electric Boulevard, SW11), Chiswick (186 Chiswick High Road, W4), Hampstead (1 Hampstead High Street, NW3) and Islington (129C Upper Street, N1). Its class page gives the time as 18:30 to 21:30. Despite the name, it says its Borough Market shop does not teach classes.

Listed prices include £129 for Applied Knife Techniques, Fresh Pasta From Scratch and Whole Fish 101, and £110 for French patisserie and French macarons. It also lists classes aimed at specific diets: Vegetarian Knife Skills and Fresh Gluten-Free Pasta at £129 and Gluten-Free Baking at £110. That makes it one of the few options here with a class built around gluten-free cooking rather than an adaptation.

Borough Kitchen says allergy and dietary details are on each class page and in an allergen matrix, and must be specified when booking. Its cancellation policy was not visible on the pages checked, so ask its cook school team before paying.

Bread Ahead: baking workshops, with strict terms

Bread Ahead lists seven UK bakeries, all in London: Borough Market, Bromley, Granary Square, King's Cross, Leicester Square, South Kensington and Wembley. Its course pages describe evening, half-day, full-day and multi-day in-person workshops. Evening classes listed include pizza and tiramisu, hand-rolled pasta and focaccia, and bagels with New York cheesecake, mostly two hours long. Half-day classes run around three hours and cover everything from doughnuts and croissants to sourdough and a gluten-free workshop.

Prices were not shown on the listing pages. The trial workshops on its homepage, such as the Pizza Workshop at the Wembley bakery school, show from £60, described as 50% off; the Pizza Workshop page lists three hours and no current dates. Check the specific site on each product page, since the location pages do not say which bakeries host classes.

The terms are the strictest in this guide. Cancellation or a date change is only possible more than three months before the course, by email, with a £25 administration charge either way. Within three months there is no refund and no rescheduling. Late arrivals may join, but not if they have missed essential parts, and those get no refund. Gift vouchers last a year and are transferable but not refundable. If Bread Ahead cancels, you get a transfer or full refund.

On diets, Bread Ahead says course content cannot be tailored for dietary requirements, a vegetarian option is given when lunch is included, and there is no fee reduction if you make your own arrangements. The pizza page lists wheat, dairy and mustard. Under-12s cannot attend and under-18s need a paying adult.

Borough Market and cookery events

Borough Market is often named in connection with cookery, and Bread Ahead and a Borough Kitchen shop both trade there. But the market's own What's On page, checked for this guide, listed no cookery classes or demonstrations: the upcoming events shown were children's half-term garden sessions in October 2026 and February 2027. The market publishes recipes and runs official tours, but if you want a hands-on class, book with a school directly rather than expecting one at the market.

Borough Kitchen's Borough Market shop, as noted above, does not teach. Bread Ahead lists a Borough Market bakery, but its pages do not confirm that classes run there now.

Comparing the cancellation rules side by side

If plans between two people are still new, the cancellation rule may matter more than the menu. Jamie Oliver Cookery School's public-class terms give a full refund or free move with 7 days' notice and stop changes within 48 hours. Bread Ahead allows changes only more than three months ahead, with a £25 fee. Leiths and Borough Kitchen did not show their terms on the pages checked; Leiths points to a PDF and Borough Kitchen to its cook school team.

Gift vouchers are another route if you want to give a class rather than fix a date. Leiths sells vouchers that can be used against any Culinary Masterclass, and Bread Ahead's vouchers last a year and can be passed to someone else.

Before you go

  • Check the price at checkout: Leiths shows two different figures on the same page, and Bread Ahead's trial prices are described as discounted.
  • Declare allergies and diets when booking, not on the day. Bread Ahead says it cannot adapt recipes at all; Jamie Oliver Cookery School says its Pasta Master is not gluten-free.
  • Read the cancellation terms before paying for two. Bread Ahead allows no refund or change within three months of the class.
  • Arrive early. Jamie Oliver Cookery School asks for 10 minutes before the start and does not admit late arrivals; Bread Ahead gives no refund if you miss essential parts.
  • Wear sensible clothes and shoes and bring a container: Leiths asks for long sleeves, long trousers and closed-toe flat shoes.
