Late openings at London museums and galleries: what runs after 6pm
Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 7 min read
A late opening and a Late event are different things. Science Museum Lates are over-18s only, run 18.30–22.00 on set dates, and offer free general tickets or £12 VIP tickets. The V&A Friday Late is free and drop-in on the last Friday of most months. Soane Lates cost £25. The Horniman runs free and ticketed evenings. Wellcome Collection has no late night.
The short version
- Science Museum Lates are adults-only (over-18s), 18.30–22.00, on dates the museum announces; general admission tickets are free and VIP tickets are £12. Luggage and large items are not allowed.
- The V&A Friday Late runs on the last Friday of every month except January, May and December, and the V&A describes it as free and drop-in.
- Sir John Soane's Museum lists Soane Lates at £25: a Halloween Special on 30 October 2026 (sold out) and one with New Architecture Writers on 27 November 2026.
- The Horniman's museum closes at 5.30pm daily, but it runs evening events; its Day of the Dead Evening Fiesta is listed for Saturday 31 October 2026, 7pm–10.30pm.
- Wellcome Collection's galleries keep 10:00–18:00 every day they open, Thursdays included, so it is a daytime choice.
- We could not read the British Museum's or Natural History Museum's own late-opening pages today, so this guide gives no times for them.
A late opening is not the same as a Late
London venues use the word late in two ways. Some simply keep the doors open into the evening on a fixed weekday, with the galleries running as normal. Others put on a Late: a one-off or monthly event with a theme, a programme and sometimes a ticket or an age rule. The first kind is easy to drop into after work. The second needs a date in the diary and, often, a booking.
Weekly evening hours for Tate Modern, the National Gallery, the V&A, V&A East, the Whitechapel Gallery and the South London Gallery are covered in our guide to free galleries and museums, so this guide does not repeat them. Here we look at the programmed evenings, the rules attached to them, and the venues where we could not confirm anything.
Every time, price and date below is quoted from the venue's own page as we read it on 14 October 2026. Programmes change month to month, so treat dates as a snapshot and check the page before you travel.
Science Museum Lates: adults only, set dates
The Science Museum describes its Lates as adults-only, after-hours events that let you explore the museum at night, with themed activities. Its Lates page gives the time as 18.30–22.00 and the date as various dates, and says entry is for over-18s only. It does not say which weekday they usually fall on.
On price, the page lists general admission tickets as free and VIP tickets at £12. The one event listed when we read it was a Pokémon x ESA Lates on Thursday 26 November 2026. The page invites you to sign up to hear when Lates go on sale, which suggests tickets are released ahead of each date rather than sold on the door, though it does not say that directly.
Two practical points from the same page: luggage and other large items are not allowed at Lates, and the museum asks visitors not to bring bags if possible to avoid long queues. The page does not mention an ID check or what food and drink is available, so we have left those out.

South Kensington
Over-18s only, 18.30–22.00 on announced dates; free general tickets, £12 VIP. No luggage or large items.
V&A Friday Late: free, monthly, drop-in
The V&A's Friday Late page says the event runs on the last Friday of every month, except January, May and December. It describes Friday Late as free and drop-in, and lists the content as live performance, film, installation, debate, DJs and more. Each edition has its own title; the one named on the page when we read it was Friday Late: Awakenings on 18 September 2026, which had already passed, so the page may not yet show the October date.
The page does not give a separate start and finish time for the event, and it says nothing about an age limit or booking. The museum itself is open until 22.00 on Fridays, as our free museums guide notes, so the Late sits inside that window.

Sir John Soane's Museum: Soane Lates
Soane's normal daytime hours and free entry are covered in our free museums guide. Its evening events are separate and charged. The museum's What's on listing, filtered to Soane Lates, showed two events when we read it: Soane Late: Halloween Special on 30 October 2026, priced at £25 and marked sold out, and Soane Late x New Architecture Writers on 27 November 2026, also £25, with booking through the Soane shop.
Neither listing gives a start time, and the page does not mention an age rule. Given how small the house is, and that the October date had already sold out by mid-month, booking early looks sensible if a Soane Late is the plan.

The Horniman: evenings in Forest Hill
The Horniman's Plan your visit page gives the museum's hours as daily, 10am–5.30pm, and the gardens as daily from 7.15am (8am on Sundays and bank holidays) until 6.30pm, closing at sunset when that is earlier. The museum and gardens are free; the Aquarium is charged at £2–£16.80 and must be booked in advance. The address is 100 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3PQ, five to ten minutes' walk, uphill, from Forest Hill station. The same page says both bus stops outside are closed because of burst water mains.
Its What's on page listed three evening events when we read it: a Day of the Dead Evening Fiesta on Saturday 31 October 2026, 7pm–10.30pm; a Members Family Bat Walk on 23 October 2026, 5–7pm, sold out; and Faust with an immersive live score on 25 October 2026, 5–7pm. That page did not give prices or age rules for them.
The Horniman also runs Museum Lates. Its page for Horniman Museum Late: Our Queer Nature – South Asia to South London, held on 2 July 2026 from 5.30pm to 9pm, said tickets were free but booking in advance was advised, gave no age limit, and noted that the event ran outdoors in the gardens with the café open for drinks and snacks. That date has passed, but it shows the format. We could not confirm from the Horniman's own pages whether Lates follow a regular monthly pattern, so check What's on for the next one.

Places with no late night, or none we could confirm
Wellcome Collection's opening times page lists the galleries and Reading Room as closed on Mondays and open 10:00–18:00 Tuesday to Sunday, with no longer Thursday or Friday. The library opens 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 10:00–16:00 on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays. Its Visit us page says most events, as well as all exhibitions, are free, so an evening event may exist on a given date, but there is no standing late opening.
The National Gallery's Visiting page confirms its Friday late but does not describe a Friday Lates programme. It does flag one exception: on 23 October 2026 the east wing closes from 6pm, while the rest of the gallery, including the Renoir and Love exhibition and the shops, stays open until 9pm, with bars, cafés and restaurants open as usual. Tate Modern's page lists its Friday and Saturday evening hours and a Members Bar, but gives no hours for its restaurant and bar and does not mention a Lates programme.
The Wallace Collection's events listing shows talks, tours and a Life Drawing Club on 17 October 2026, but no times or prices on the listing itself and no Friday Lates schedule. We could not load the British Museum's or the Natural History Museum's own pages today, and secondary listings disagree, so we give no times or prices for either. Wikipedia notes that the British Museum, like other UK national museums, charges no admission except for loan exhibitions; for evening hours, use the museum's own late-opening page.
Choosing an evening
If you want no booking and no cost, the V&A Friday Late is the clearest fit, with a stated monthly pattern and a drop-in format. If you want something more structured, the Science Museum's adults-only Lates have an age rule and themed programmes, and the Soane Lates are small and ticketed. If you live south-east, the Horniman's evening events put a garden and a museum within reach of the Overground at Forest Hill.
Think about the end of the night as well as the start. A 22.00 finish in South Kensington or a 10.30pm finish in Forest Hill leaves time to travel home, but check your route before you go. Our guide to getting home safely after a date covers late transport.
Before you go
- Check the date on the venue's own page the week you go; Late programmes change month to month and some sell out.
- For Science Museum Lates, everyone must be over 18; leave luggage and large bags at home.
- Book ahead where the venue advises it: Soane Lates and Horniman Lates both did.
- Separate weekly late hours from programmed events; the free museums guide lists the weekly ones.
- Plan the route home before a 22.00 finish.
