First date ideas in London that aren't a pub: free and low-cost plans by purpose

Sources checked 4 October 2026 · 9 min read

Match the place to the job: seats and a café for talking, a park or the Regent's Canal for walking, a free gallery for something to look at. Tate Modern, the National Gallery and the V&A all have free collections and open late on Fridays. Hours below were checked on 4 October 2026, so confirm before you travel.

The short version

  • Pick the date by its job: talking, walking, looking at something together, or eating. Each needs a different kind of place.
  • Free entry covers most options here: the collections at Tate Modern, the National Gallery, the V&A, Wellcome Collection and the Museum of the Home were all listed as free on 4 October 2026.
  • Evenings: Tate Modern is open until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, the National Gallery until 21:00 on Fridays, the V&A until 22:00 on Fridays (some galleries close after 17:45), and the Barbican's building and foyers until 23:00.
  • Parks have gate times: the Royal Parks pages list pedestrian gates closing at 19:00 in Regent's Park and Greenwich Park, and Kensington Gardens' page read 19:00 on 4 October but 18:30 on 5 October, so a walk needs an end time.
  • Some places close on weekdays: Wellcome Collection's galleries are closed on Mondays, and Sir John Soane's Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Check access before you choose: Tate Modern, the V&A, Wellcome Collection and the Museum of the Home each state step-free access, and the Soane asks visitors with access needs to contact it in advance.

Choose the date by its job

A first date has one practical job: it lets two people find out whether they want a second. Different places support different kinds of conversation, so it can help to match the place to the job. If you expect to talk, choose somewhere with seats and a café. If you are nervous, choose somewhere with something to look at, so a pause does not feel like a failure. If you want to see how someone moves through a day, choose a walk.

Every opening time below was checked against the venue's or operator's own page on 4 October 2026 (two secondary sources are flagged where used). Each entry gives the days or times it is closed, because a locked door is the most avoidable way for a first date to start badly. Hours, exhibitions and gardens change, so treat the times as a guide and confirm on the day.

A plan with a natural end, such as a gallery that closes at 18:00 or a park gate that locks at 19:00, gives both people an easy way to leave and an easy way to extend. If it goes well, a nearby café or market becomes the second half of the plan. If it does not, nobody has to invent an excuse.

To talk: places with seats, a café and no pressure

The Barbican says its building and foyers are free to explore and open to everyone, whether you are there for an event, meeting friends, studying or grabbing a coffee. Its listed hours are 08:00 to 23:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 to 23:00 at weekends, which is later than any other place in this guide, with bank holidays listed as 11:00 to 23:00. One caution: the Barbican's Conservatory page said on 4 October 2026 that there were no upcoming public opening dates, so do not build a plan around it.

Wellcome Collection on Euston Road lists its galleries and Reading Room as open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and closed on Mondays. It says all its permanent and temporary exhibitions, and most of its events, are free, and that the building has step-free access and hearing loops. The café and shop are listed as open 10:00 to 18:00. It is a daytime plan, because it closes at 18:00 on every day it is open.

The Museum of the Home in Hoxton is open 10:00 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and on bank holiday Mondays. Entry is free, no booking is needed, and the museum states that step-free access is available to the museum and its galleries.

    183 Euston Road, NW1

Galleries are free, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays, with step-free access and hearing loops.

To walk: parks, a canal and a view

The Royal Parks page for The Regent's Park and Primrose Hill lists pedestrian gates as open 05:00 to 19:00 and vehicle gates 07:00 to midnight, and says Primrose Hill is closed from 22:00 to 06:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 3 April until 8 November. The park has Queen Mary's Garden, which the page says has 8,000 roses, boating on the lake, and the panoramic views of London from Primrose Hill.

St James's Park lists some pedestrian gates as open 05:00 to midnight. The Royal Parks page says pelicans have been kept there since 1664 and describes classic London views from the lake. It is a short plan in a central place, which suits a first meeting when neither of you wants a long commitment.

Greenwich Park lists pedestrian gates as open 06:00 to 19:00. The Royal Observatory, which the page says marks where the Greenwich Prime Meridian begins, is in the park, and the page describes sweeping views over London's skyline from the Observatory and views away from the crowds at the summit of One Tree Hill. The National Maritime Museum lists free entry (booking recommended) and daily opening from 10:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:15, which gives you an indoor fallback. It names Greenwich station, Cutty Sark DLR and Maze Hill as its nearest stations.

Kensington Gardens listed pedestrian gates as open 06:00 to 19:00 on 4 October and 06:00 to 18:30 when the page was re-read on 5 October, and has the Peter Pan statue, the Italian Gardens with fountains and the Albert Memorial. Serpentine North, one of two Serpentine galleries in the gardens, has free entry and lists Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Its page advises booking a ticket even though entry is free, says the galleries have full disability access, and names Lancaster Gate on the Central line as the closest of three Tube stations, at about 876 metres.

For a walk with a built-in direction, the Canal & River Trust says the Regent's Canal runs between Paddington and Limehouse, through Regent's Park and past Camden Town, and describes Little Venice, where the Grand Union Canal meets the Regent's Canal, as having narrowboats, day trip boats and water cafés. Wikipedia, a secondary source, gives the canal's length as 8.6 miles, so a first date covers a stretch of it, not the whole route.

Treat the gate times as figures from 4 and 5 October. The Primrose Hill rule shows that closing times change with the season, and a walk that ends at a locked gate is a poor ending.

  • The Regent's Park and Primrose Hillpark

    Regent's Park, NW1

A canal running between Paddington and Limehouse, through Regent's Park and past Camden Town, with Little Venice at the western end.

To look at something together: free collections and late openings

Tate Modern states that entry to the collection is free for everyone. It lists Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:00 and Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 21:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Exhibitions are separate from the free collection, and the page advises booking. For access, it states step-free entry via the Turbine Hall ramp or the Blavatnik Building, lifts to all floors, accessible toilets on every floor and quiet rooms for neurodiverse visitors. Southwark, on the Jubilee line, is the first of the nearest stations it names, at about 600 metres.

The National Gallery lists daily opening from 10:00 to 18:00, with Friday until 21:00, and says general admission is free. It is closed on 24 to 26 December and 1 January. It states that toilets are near all entrances and that Changing Places facilities are on the ground floors.

The V&A lists daily opening from 10:00 to 17:45 and Fridays until 22:00, with some galleries closing after 17:45. Admission is free, though some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. It says the Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road entrances are step-free, that South Kensington station is a five-minute walk, and that the nearest step-free Tube stations are Knightsbridge (a 14-minute walk) and Earl's Court (1.2 miles).

Sir John Soane's Museum is normally open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission usually at 16:30, and it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but open on bank holidays. Entry is free with no need to book. The museum says it has limited space and is very popular, so you may need to wait for admission. It says the building's architectural features can pose some challenges for visitors, and asks anyone who needs adjustments to contact it in advance. Holborn is a five-minute walk, according to its page.

For a longer afternoon: Kenwood and the Horniman

English Heritage lists Kenwood's house as open daily 10:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, with free admission. Advance online booking guarantees entry, though a ticket is not required. The house has paintings including Rembrandt's Self-Portrait with Two Circles, and the page describes 112 acres of parkland designed by Humphry Repton, plus a café. It stands on Hampstead Lane on the edge of Hampstead Heath. English Heritage's page did not give step-free details when checked on 4 October 2026, so confirm with them if access matters.

The Horniman in Forest Hill lists its museum as open 10:00 to 17:30, with gardens open from 07:15 (08:00 on Sundays and bank holidays) to 18:30. The museum and gardens are free; there is a charge for the Aquarium, the Butterfly House and some events and exhibitions. It says Forest Hill is on the Windrush line and 15 minutes from London Bridge by train. Its access page says the main public entrance is fully accessible and a lift reaches all exhibition areas, but that some garden paths are very steep and may not suit wheelchair users or anyone unsteady on wet or frosty days. The Natural History Gallery was listed as closed for refurbishment on 4 October 2026, and the access page says afternoons in term time are the quietest.

  • Kenwoodmuseum

    Hampstead Lane, NW3

To eat: one anchor, then a plan B

Borough Market says it is run by a charitable trust on behalf of the community and lists its opening times as Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, closed on Mondays. It also says visitor numbers can be high at peak times, particularly on Saturday afternoons. A standing-up market in a crowd can be loud for a first conversation, so a quieter slot is likely to be easier for talking.

Tate Modern and Borough Market both have SE1 addresses, so a free gallery first and food second can be one plan. Check the route on a map before you commit, because this guide does not state a walking time between them. For more market options, see our guide to London markets for a date.

  • Borough Marketmarket

    8 Southwark Street, SE1

Run by a charitable trust, open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Monday.

Daytime or evening, and how to get there

For an evening first date, the options in this guide with listed late hours are the Barbican's free foyers (to 23:00), Tate Modern on Fridays and Saturdays (to 21:00), the National Gallery on Fridays (to 21:00) and the V&A on Fridays (to 22:00). Wellcome Collection, the Museum of the Home, Sir John Soane's Museum, Kenwood's house and the National Maritime Museum all close between 17:00 and 18:00, so they suit a daytime plan.

Venue pages name stations only sometimes, so use TfL's Journey Planner, which lets you choose an arrival time and a step-free option, rather than guessing. If the date runs late, TfL lists Night Tube services on Friday and Saturday nights on selected lines, which our guide to getting home safely explains. To judge how far each of you will travel, see our guide to dating in London and the Tube.

Before you go

  • Confirm hours on the venue's page on the day. This guide records what the pages said on 4 October 2026, and galleries and gardens can close for works.
  • Choose an indoor plan B before you choose an outdoor plan. Several parks here have gate closing times, and the Primrose Hill rule changes with the season.
  • Free means the collection, not every exhibition. Tate Modern's exhibitions are separate from its free collection, and the V&A says some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge.
  • Check access for both of you. Step-free access is stated by Tate Modern, the V&A, Wellcome Collection, the Museum of the Home and the Horniman's main entrance, while the Soane and some Horniman garden paths come with caveats.
  • Agree how each of you is getting home before the date starts, not at the end of it.
