Free Galleries and Museums in London for a Date: What Is Actually Free

Sources checked 4 October 2026 · 9 min read

Many of London's large collections are free to enter, including Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the National Gallery, the V&A and the Science Museum; the cost usually sits with the headline exhibition. For an evening date, use the late openings each venue states: Tate Modern on Friday and Saturday, the National Gallery and V&A on Friday, the Whitechapel Gallery on Thursday.

The short version

  • Free almost always means the permanent collection or general admission. Tate, the V&A, the Natural History Museum and the Whitechapel Gallery each say on their own pages that some exhibitions are ticketed.
  • Evenings, as each venue states them today: Tate Modern Friday and Saturday to 21.00; National Gallery Friday to 21.00; V&A South Kensington Friday to 22.00; V&A East Thursday and Saturday to 22.00; Whitechapel Gallery Thursday to 21.00; South London Gallery Wednesday to 21.00.
  • Mondays are thin. The Wellcome Collection galleries, Whitechapel Gallery, Sir John Soane's Museum, Museum of the Home, Serpentine North and South London Gallery are not open on Mondays (Soane's and the Museum of the Home do open on bank holidays).
  • Smaller venues: Sir John Soane's Museum (free, no booking, but its page warns you may have to wait for admission), the Wallace Collection (permanent collection free) and the Wellcome Collection (all exhibitions free).
  • Several pages describe access: step-free routes in at Tate Modern, a ramped entrance at Tate Britain, a step-free Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery, full disability access at the Serpentine, step-free access at the Wellcome Collection and lift access to all areas of the Design Museum. Sir John Soane's asks you to contact it in advance about access.

What free actually covers

Free in London usually means one of three things, and each venue's page says which. At Tate Modern, collection access is free while exhibitions need a paid ticket. At the National Gallery, general entry is free, donations are welcome, and an exhibition ticket includes general admission. At the Wellcome Collection, all permanent and temporary exhibitions are free. Knowing which of the three applies saves an awkward moment at the door.

The V&A's South Kensington and V&A East pages each state that admission is free, with some exhibitions and events charged separately. The Natural History Museum says its galleries are free to explore and that exhibitions and special events may have separate charges; it also offers free entry tickets that can be booked in advance to guarantee entry, which it suggests for busy weekends and school holidays. The Science Museum lists free entry, welcomes donations and invites you to book free general admission tickets. The Whitechapel Gallery runs free displays and one ticketed exhibition each season.

A plan built around the free collection costs nothing, and an exhibition ticket becomes a separate, optional decision. Treating it that way keeps a first plan cheap and easy to leave early.

Large collections you can walk round for an hour or three

Tate Modern is open Sunday to Thursday 10.00–18.00 and Friday and Saturday 10.00–21.00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Its page names two step-free routes in, through the Turbine Hall or through the Blavatnik Building from Park Street, and says there are lifts throughout and accessible toilets on every floor.

Tate Britain opens daily 10.00–18.00, with last entry at 17.30 and the galleries closing at 17.50. Its page says the main Millbank entrance is closed until 2027 for garden construction and that the Manton Entrance on Atterbury Street is the main way in for now, with a ramp down to the entrance and automatic sliding doors. It also lists a quiet room on the main floor for neurodiverse people, families or anyone who wants some quiet time. The page we read did not mention evening openings.

The National Gallery is open daily 10am–6pm and until 9pm on Fridays, closed 24–26 December and 1 January. Its access page says the Sainsbury Wing is the main entrance for everyone and has step-free access, and names Tottenham Court Road and Westminster as the closest step-free tube stations and Charing Cross, about 200 metres away, as the nearest step-free rail station.

The V&A in South Kensington is open daily 10.00–17.45 and until 22.00 on Fridays, and admission is free. The Design Museum on Kensington High Street opens 10.00–17.00 Monday to Thursday and 10.00–18.00 Friday to Sunday; its permanent exhibition, Designer Maker User, is free to visit without a ticket, while pre-booking is recommended for paid exhibitions. Its Getting here page names High Street Kensington as the nearest station, a ten-minute walk, and its access page says all areas of the museum are accessible by lift and that the entrance is at street level.

Sir John Soane's Museum is normally open Wednesday to Sunday 10am–5pm, with last admission usually 4.30pm, and is closed Monday and Tuesday but open on bank holidays. Entry is free and the page says there is no need to pre-book. It also warns that the museum has limited space and is very popular, so you may have to wait for admission. Because of that queue, a walk-in visit fits a short first stop better than the whole date. Holborn is given as about a five-minute walk, and visitors with disabilities are asked to contact the museum in advance so their requirements can be met.

The Wallace Collection at Hertford House, Manchester Square, is open daily 10.00–17.00 and says entry to the permanent collection is free. It closes on 24, 25 and 26 December. Its page mentions Friday Lates as an event type without giving a schedule, so check before planning an evening around it.

The Whitechapel Gallery is closed on Mondays. It is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11am–6pm and Thursday 11am–9pm. Alba Caffè is open Tuesday to Sunday and serves spritzes, wines and small bites until 9pm on Thursdays. The page says the gallery is less than a minute's walk from Aldgate East station, mentions lifts to the Common Rooms and points to an Access page.

The South London Gallery on Peckham Road says it is free to visit and open Wednesday 12pm–9pm and Thursday to Sunday 12–6pm. The page we read did not give accessibility details, so use its Access page before travelling.

The galleries state full disability access, and the nearest tube listed is Lancaster Gate on the Central line, about 876 metres away.

V&A East Museum in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, states that admission is free. It is open daily 10.00–18.00 and until 22.00 on Thursday and Saturday, with some exhibitions and events charged separately.

When you want something to look at together: science, nature and the river

The Natural History Museum on Cromwell Road is open daily 10.00–17.50, with last entry at 17.30, and says its galleries are free to explore. Its page lists closures on 24–26 December. Its getting-here page names South Kensington as the nearest Tube station, about a five-minute walk, says the station itself is not step-free, and says the subway tunnel from the station gives step-free access to the museum's Central Entrance.

London Museum Docklands lists Monday to Sunday 10am–5pm and describes itself as free and open to all. Its address is No. 1 Warehouse, West India Quay, and the page says it is a few minutes' walk from Canary Wharf and West India Quay stations and, thanks to the Elizabeth line, a short Tube ride from central London. The page also says the new London Museum at Smithfield opens on 28 November 2026.

Evening openings, as stated

If you want a date that starts after work, these are the late openings the venues' own pages state today. Tate Modern: Friday and Saturday until 21.00. National Gallery: Friday until 21.00. V&A South Kensington: Friday until 22.00. V&A East: Thursday and Saturday until 22.00. Whitechapel Gallery: Thursday until 21.00, with Pay What You Can entry to exhibitions from 18.00. South London Gallery: Wednesday until 21.00.

Tate Britain's page did not mention an evening opening, and the Wallace Collection page mentions Friday Lates without giving dates, so treat those as unconfirmed. Last entry also matters: Tate Modern admits visitors until 30 minutes before closing, and Tate Britain's galleries start closing at 17.50.

Choosing by mood, time and area

If you want a clear stopping point, pick a smaller place: the Wallace Collection, the Wellcome Collection, the Serpentine or the South London Gallery. A large collection lets two people wander at their own pace and regroup later; a small one keeps you in the same rooms together. Both can work on a first date, and the difference is mostly about how much conversation you want to carry.

If you are choosing by day, these venues list Monday opening: Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the National Gallery, the V&A, the Design Museum, the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Wallace Collection and London Museum Docklands. The Wellcome Collection, Whitechapel Gallery and Sir John Soane's Museum are the notable Monday closures.

If you are choosing by area, the V&A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum are all in South Kensington. Tate Modern is on Bankside and the National Gallery is on Trafalgar Square. In the east, the Whitechapel Gallery is by Aldgate East, the Museum of the Home is in Hoxton and V&A East is in Stratford. The South London Gallery is on Peckham Road.

Before you go

  • Confirm hours and exhibition entry rules on the venue's own page on the day you travel. This post reflects each page as read on 4 October 2026, and programmes change.
  • Book where a page asks you to: the Science Museum invites you to book free general admission tickets, the Serpentine advises booking tickets in advance, the Natural History Museum offers free entry tickets you can book to guarantee entry, and the Design Museum recommends pre-booking paid exhibitions.
  • Check closure notes on each venue's page: several close on 24–26 December and some close for one-off events.
  • Read the venue's access page before travelling. Several pages name step-free or ramped entrances, but Sir John Soane's asks you to contact it in advance (020 7405 2107, as its page gives) and Tate Britain's main entrance is the Manton Entrance on Atterbury Street while the Millbank entrance is closed.
  • Last entry is earlier than closing at several places: Tate Modern 30 minutes before closing, Tate Britain 17.30, the Natural History Museum 17.30 and Sir John Soane's usually 16.30.
