The French Quarter is the long-standing centre of LGBTQ+ life in New Orleans: the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann streets is the area most associated with gay nightlife, the Pride parade winds through the Quarter each June, and Pridefest, which began as a block party outside the Phoenix bar in the Marigny, moves to Woldenberg Riverfront Park Esplanade for 2027. Southern Decadence, an LGBTQ event with roots in 1972, fills the Quarter over Labor Day weekend. For everyday support, the New Orleans Pride Center on Orleans Avenue offers sliding-scale counselling and youth programmes, CrescentCare provides HIV and STI testing and PrEP, and the LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana helps preserve the state's history.

As of 2026: Louisiana has no statewide law barring discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity; New Orleans and Shreveport have local ordinances. According to the Movement Advancement Project (checked October 2026), Louisiana also restricts transgender people: it bans gender-affirming medical care for under-18s, restricts transgender students' participation in school sports and use of school facilities, defines sex in state law, restricts changing the gender marker on a driver's licence or birth certificate, has Medicaid and state-employee-benefit exclusions for transgender care, and has a 'Don't Say LGBTQ' law restricting educators. Federal law (Bostock, 2020) separately bars sexual-orientation and gender-identity discrimination by employers with 15 or more employees, so workers at smaller employers outside New Orleans and Shreveport have no protection; Obergefell (2015) protects same-sex marriage.
