LGBTQ+ life in Taipei: the practical bits

Taiwan's Pride parade assembles at Taipei City Hall Plaza; on Saturday 31 October 2026 it makes north and south loops along Ren'ai Road, Dunhua South Road and nearby avenues, with a rainbow market from noon. Ximending, around the Red House, is the neighbourhood most often linked with the city's gay scene and has featured in past marches. The Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association, founded in 1998, offers phone counselling on 02-2392-1970 (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 7pm to 9pm Taiwan time), and the Taiwan Equality Campaign, which grew out of the marriage equality coalition, works on politics and public education.

The legal picture

As of 2026, same-sex couples can marry in Taiwan under the Act for Implementation of J.Y. Interpretation No. 748, in force since 24 May 2019, which also applies Civil Code adoption rules to same-sex couples.

Support and community in Taipei

• Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association — Founded 1998; says it is Taiwan's oldest and largest LGBTQ+ organisation. Phone counselling 02-2392-1970, 19:00-21:00 Mon, Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun (Taiwan time).
• Taiwan Equality Campaign — Successor to the Marriage Equality Coalition (campaigning since 2016); works on political participation, public education and international cooperation.
• Taiwan Gender Equity Education Association — Taipei-based association running gender-equality advocacy, education, publishing and international exchange programmes.
