LGBTQ+ life in Chicago: the practical bits

Northalsted, centred on Halsted Street in Lakeview, is Chicago's recognised LGBTQ+ neighbourhood. Its business alliance, based at 3656 N. Halsted, points visitors to the Legacy Walk, an outdoor museum of bronze memorials designated a Chicago historic landmark, as well as rainbow crosswalks and Pride murals. Center on Halsted opened its present building in 2007 and offers counselling, youth and senior programmes and HIV/STI testing. Howard Brown Health runs clinics on the North, West and South sides, and Windy City Times has covered the community since 1985. The Chicago Pride Parade steps off at Broadway and Grace at 11 a.m. on the last Sunday of June.

The legal picture

As of 2026, the Illinois Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, defined to include gender-related identity, in employment, housing and public accommodations. Federal law (Bostock, 2020) separately bars sexual-orientation and gender-identity discrimination by employers with 15 or more employees.
