LGBTQ+ life in Austin: the practical bits

Austin's LGBTQ+ history centres on Fourth Street downtown, where the City dedicated an official LGBTQIA+ historical marker at Fourth and Colorado in August 2026. Austin Pride is held in August rather than June: its night parade leaves the Texas State Capitol at 8 p.m. and heads south along Congress Avenue to the Congress Avenue Bridge. OutYouth, on North Lamar Boulevard, has served young people since 1990, and Waterloo Counseling Center has offered queer-affirming therapy since 1983. A volunteer Memory Project works with the Austin History Center to collect oral histories, and Equality Texas, founded in 1978, handles statewide advocacy. KUT reported that Pride-themed crosswalks at Fourth and Colorado were removed in July 2026 after a state directive; the city dedicated the marker a month later.

The legal picture

As of 2026, Texas has no comprehensive statewide nondiscrimination law covering sexual orientation or gender identity; federal law (Bostock, 2020) covers employment at employers with 15 or more employees. Texas law also restricts transgender people's use of bathrooms in government buildings, regulates legal sex definitions and bans gender-affirming care for minors, and the Movement Advancement Project rates the state negative for gender-identity policy. Austin's own ordinance and Civil Rights Division offer local protections, per the city.

• Equality Texas — Statewide LGBTQIA+ advocacy nonprofit founded in 1978; tracks legislation, trains advocates and connects Texans with resources.
• Waterloo Counseling Center — Queer-affirming therapy since 1983, in person in Austin and virtually across Texas; a program of Texas Health Action.
