Dance Classes in London for a Date: Queer Ballroom, Swing and Salsa, With Prices

Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 10 min read

A beginners' dance class gives a date a shared task, a reason to laugh at yourselves and a built-in end time. In London, Pink Jukebox runs LGBTQIA+ ballroom and Latin afternoons at Bishopsgate Institute, Queer Salsa runs beginners' courses, Swing Patrol teaches drop-in Lindy Hop with no partner needed, and Danceworks lists an Old Way Vogue beginners' class. This guide gives prices, levels and how each one handles roles.

The short version

  • Pink Jukebox, at Bishopsgate Institute (230 Bishopsgate, EC2M 4QH), describes itself as a ballroom and Latin dance club for the LGBTQIA+ community and their friends. Classes run 2pm–4.30pm on Sundays, then social dancing to 7pm; advance tickets are £14 (£12 for members) and £16 on the door. Its autumn run continues on 25 October, 8 and 22 November and 13 December 2026.
  • Swing Patrol's weekly classes cost £15 cash on the door (£10 for full-time university students with ID), with no advance booking. Its page says you do not need a partner and that partners are usually rotated through the class.
  • Bishopsgate Institute's Swing Den, hosted with Swing Patrol, is a social dance aimed at beginners with a taster lesson at the start; tickets are £12 in advance (£9 concession) and £15 on the door. Its Dance in a Day Lindy Hop workshop on 25 October asks you to sign up as a lead or follow, but says the organisers do not mind which role you choose.
  • Queer Salsa has run a Thursday-evening beginners' course at Bishopsgate Institute covering Cuban casino and rueda, and free complete-beginner sessions at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre in summer 2026 where no partner was needed.
  • Morley College's 12-week Saturday beginners' ballroom and Latin course says no partner is required and that leaders and followers rotate; the City of London's Golden Lane course asks you to pick leader or follower when enrolling.
  • We could not find a current Queer Tango London listing on Bishopsgate Institute's calendar for October or November 2026, so check before you plan around it.

Why a dance class works for a date

A beginners' class takes the pressure off conversation. You both have something to concentrate on, nobody expects you to be good, and the teacher sets the pace. Most of the classes below last an hour or two, which gives a date a natural shape: the class, then a drink or a walk if it is going well.

The practical questions for queer couples are whether you need to bring a partner, and whether the class assumes that men lead and women follow. The organisers below answer those questions in different ways, and we quote them as closely as we can. Everything here comes from the organisers' own pages as read on 14 October 2026; timetables change by term, so check the page for the date you choose.

Queer ballroom and Latin: Pink Jukebox

Pink Jukebox describes itself as a ballroom and Latin dance club for LGBTQ+ people and their friends. It meets on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at Bishopsgate Institute, 230 Bishopsgate, EC2M 4QH. Classes run from 2pm to 4.30pm, at advanced, intermediate and beginner levels, followed by social dancing until 7pm. The club's site says dancers of all levels, including absolute beginners, are welcome.

Bishopsgate's listing for the current run gives Sunday dates of 25 October, 8 and 22 November and 13 December 2026, continuing into March 2027. Advance tickets are £14, or £12 for Pink Jukebox members; on the door it is £16, or £14 for members showing a card. Annual membership is £10, according to the club's site. The social part mixes standard ballroom and Latin with alternative rhythms and line and sequence dances, and events are for over-18s only, with a licensed bar.

Neither page sets out a lead/follow policy in words, so if that matters to you, ask the organisers before you go. The club's site also says the Pink Jukebox Trophy, a same-sex competition, returns to Bishopsgate Institute on Saturday 20 February 2027.

Second and fourth Sundays; classes 2pm–4.30pm at three levels, social dancing to 7pm; £14 in advance (£12 members), £16 on the door; over-18s.

Queer salsa: Queer Salsa

Queer Salsa has run a beginners' course on Thursday evenings at Bishopsgate Institute. The listing we read, for a course running from 10 September to 8 October, gives a 7pm–9pm class teaching Cuban salsa (casino) and rueda de casino, with each session split between footwork, partnerwork and rueda calls. It says the course aims to be a space where everyone can enjoy partner dancing regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The page does not state a price; booking is through Queer Salsa's own site, so check there for the next course.

In summer 2026, Queer Salsa and Queer Minds ran free complete-beginner sessions at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre, 60–62 Hopton Street, Bankside, SE1. That listing said no dance partner was needed, people were welcome to come alone, and everyone rotated partners while learning a short routine. Those dates (June to August) have passed, but the format is a useful sign of how the organisers teach, and the Community Centre's events page is worth watching for a repeat.

Swing and Lindy Hop: Swing Patrol

Swing Patrol runs weekly classes at several London venues, mostly teaching Lindy Hop with some Blues, Balboa and Shag. Its prices page lists one class at £15 (£10 for full-time university students with ID), two classes at £23, a five-class card at £67.50 and a ten-class card at £135. You pay cash on the door: the page says there are no card payments and no advance booking. Its beginners' level covers six- and eight-count Lindy Hop and 1920s and 1930s Charleston, is described as drop-in friendly, and is where students typically stay for two to four months.

On partners, Swing Patrol says there is no need to bring one and that partners are usually rotated through the class. The page does not set out a gender rule for leading and following. For a date, rotation is worth knowing about: you will dance with other people for much of the class, which some couples enjoy and others do not.

Swing Patrol also hosts two events at Bishopsgate Institute. Swing Den runs on Friday evenings from 7pm to 11pm, on dates including 6 November and 4 December 2026, and is described as a social dance especially for beginners, with a taster lesson at the start and two teachers on hand. Tickets are £12 in advance (£9 concession) and £15 on the door. Dance in a Day: Lindy Hop runs from 2pm to 5.30pm on Sunday 25 October and Sunday 22 November 2026; the listing says it is a partnered dance, so you sign up as a lead or a follow, but that the organisers do not mind which role you choose and partners rotate. It does not give a price, as tickets are booked through Swing Patrol.

Ballroom courses that do not assume roles: Morley College, City of London and Bishopsgate Ballroom

If you would rather commit to a term, Morley College's Ballroom and Latin American Dance Beginners course runs on Saturday mornings, 11am–12.30pm, for 12 weeks from 19 September to 12 December 2026, at 61 Westminster Bridge Road, SE1. It costs £245, or £185 at the concession price, and the page says late starts are accepted. It states that no partner is required, that leaders and followers rotate partners in a systematic way, and that those who prefer a fixed partner can be accommodated. It is for over-19s. Morley also ran Ballroom and Latin Socials earlier in 2026, at £10, described as LGBTQIA+ friendly with same-sex couples warmly welcomed; the June date we read had ended, and we found no autumn date.

The City of London's adult education service runs Ballroom and Latin Dance for Beginners and Improvers on Tuesdays, 5pm–7pm, from 15 September to 8 December 2026, at Golden Lane Community Centre, EC1Y 0RN. The fee is £216 a term, with a £75 concession for eligible residents. You choose leader or follower when enrolling, and the page does not restrict either role by gender; if your chosen role is full, you can join a waiting list.

Bishopsgate Ballroom, on selected Fridays from 23 October 2026 (7.30pm–10.30pm), is a social dance rather than a class, so the page recommends knowing some steps first, though a 15-minute solo taster opens each evening and needs no partner. It says dancers can lead or follow, and that its Dance Hosts will lead or follow, whichever you prefer. Tickets are £14 in advance (£12 concession) and £16 on the door. Its list of dances includes Argentine tango and salsa alongside waltz, quickstep and cha cha cha.

Queer tango: what we could and could not confirm

Queer tango, in which either partner can lead or follow regardless of gender, is the style most often asked about for a queer date. Queer Tango London has previously held Friday-night classes and milongas at Bishopsgate Institute, but the Bishopsgate event pages we tried for it returned errors, and the Bishopsgate calendar dates we checked for October and November 2026 did not list it. We have therefore not given its prices or schedule. Check Bishopsgate Institute's What's On calendar, or contact its box office, before planning around it.

For background only, a 2015 SW Londoner article described the teacher Lora Hudson teaching tango in regular and same-sex classes in Clapham, at the Plough Studios on Park Hill Road, and the fluidity of roles in what it called same-gender tango. That article is more than ten years old, so treat it as history rather than a current listing. In the meantime, Bishopsgate Ballroom includes Argentine tango among its dances and lets you lead or follow as you prefer.

Voguing and contemporary drop-ins: Danceworks, Pineapple, Rambert and Sadler's Wells East

Danceworks, in Mayfair about three minutes' walk from Bond Street station by its own description, lists an Old Way Vogue class marked beginner on Saturdays, 6.30pm–8pm. Its beginners' timetable also includes salsa (Monday 7pm, Thursday 7pm and Sunday 1pm), bachata on Mondays at 8pm and contemporary on Mondays and Saturdays. Its package page lists five-class packs from £57 for classes priced at £12, and a universal five-class pack at £61.75. You need a Mindbody account to book, classes open seven days ahead, and the page says you can book at reception immediately before a class if there is space. It says to come on your own, with friends or partners.

Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden says it runs about 400 open classes a week across more than 40 styles, for everyone from complete beginners to advanced professionals. Its home page does not list adult prices, so check its timetable before you go. Wikipedia says Debbie Moore opened the studios in 1979 in a former pineapple warehouse, which gave them their name.

Rambert, at 99 Upper Ground on the South Bank, lists adult evening classes from Monday to Thursday for over-18s, including contemporary and ballet, bookable as a single drop-in or a 12-week term; its autumn term runs from 14 September to 5 December 2026. Its classes page does not give the drop-in price. It asks you to wear comfortable clothes, says bare feet are fine and asks you to avoid dark-soled shoes. Sadler's Wells East in Stratford runs The Dance Floor, a programme of free activities that includes Open Dance, where you can use the floor for free, and lunchtime classes for all levels; its page does not state prices for every activity.

Choosing by day and budget

For a Sunday afternoon, Pink Jukebox (from 2pm on the second and fourth Sunday) and Swing Patrol's Dance in a Day on 25 October and 22 November both fall at Bishopsgate Institute, as it happens on the same afternoon on 25 October. For a Friday night, Swing Den and Bishopsgate Ballroom alternate across the autumn. Saturday options include Morley's morning course and Danceworks' evening Old Way Vogue class.

On cost, a single Swing Patrol class is £15, Pink Jukebox and Bishopsgate Ballroom are £14 in advance, and Danceworks' pack prices work out at roughly £11 to £12 a class. The term courses at Morley (£245) and Golden Lane (£216) cost more up front but run for 12 or 13 weeks, which suits a couple who are already seeing each other rather than a first date.

Before you go

  • Check the date on the organiser's own page. This guide reflects pages read on 14 October 2026, and several listings run by term or season.
  • Ask how roles work if it matters to you. Morley rotates leaders and followers, Golden Lane has you pick a role when enrolling, Bishopsgate Ballroom lets you lead or follow, and Swing Patrol's Dance in a Day does not mind which role you sign up for.
  • Expect partner rotation in many beginners' classes, including Swing Patrol's and Morley's, so you will not dance only with your date.
  • Bring cash for Swing Patrol, which takes no cards and no advance bookings.
  • Bishopsgate's social dance evenings are for over-18s, and Morley's course is for over-19s.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. Rambert asks dancers to avoid dark-soled shoes, and Bishopsgate Ballroom asks for no sharp heels.
