Queer Cabaret, Drag and Comedy in London: Venues, Tickets and History, Checked
Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 7 min read
For a date built around a show, London's main options are Soho Theatre on Dean Street for comedy and cabaret, Phoenix Arts Club for nightly cabaret and drag, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern for drag history, Bethnal Green Working Men's Club for ticketed club nights, and The Divine in Dalston, which follows the closure of The Glory. This guide gives what each states it programmes, how booking works and what to confirm.
The short version
- Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, describes itself as a producer of new theatre, comedy and cabaret. Wikipedia gives three spaces: a 165-seat Main House, a 90-seat Studio and a 140-seat Cabaret Space. Shows listed on its access page started from £15 to £25 on the check date.
- Soho Theatre lists captioned, BSL interpreted, audio described and relaxed performances, plus touch tours, booked through a free Access Account.
- Phoenix Arts Club, 1 Phoenix Street, says it runs nightly multi-act shows including drag, musical theatre, burlesque and comedy, with tickets from £15 and advance booking essential.
- The Royal Vauxhall Tavern was Grade II listed on 8 September 2015, according to Wikipedia, the first UK building listed for its importance to LGBTQ history.
- The Glory at 281 Kingsland Road says on its own site that it has closed. The same team's phone number appears on The Divine, a new queer bar and performance venue at 33 Stoke Newington Road.
- Most of these venues' own pages give no step-free or toilet details, so contact them before you book if access matters.
Why a show works for a date, and how this guide was checked
A cabaret, drag or comedy show takes some pressure off a first or second date. There is something to react to together, the conversation has a starting point afterwards, and a set running time gives you a natural moment to decide whether to stay for another drink or head home.
Every venue detail below was read from the venue's own website, or from Wikipedia for history, on 14 October 2026. Where a page did not say something, such as step-free access or age limits, this guide says so rather than guessing. Line-ups, prices and opening hours change often, so treat everything here as a starting point and check the listing for the night you want.
The scope here is rooms that programme queer performance and comedy. For general theatre deals, live music rooms and free concerts, see the related guides at the end of this page.
Soho Theatre: comedy and cabaret in the West End, with clear access options
Soho Theatre describes itself on its homepage as a producer of new theatre, comedy and cabaret, presenting stand-up and cabaret from established and emerging artists alongside new plays. Its main building is at 21 Dean Street, W1D 3NE. Its visit page names Tottenham Court Road as the nearest station, on the Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines, with an Elizabeth line exit on Dean Street.
According to Wikipedia, the Soho Theatre Company was formed in 1969 by Verity Bargate and Fred Proud, and the Dean Street building opened in 2000 after a Lottery grant. Wikipedia lists a 165-seat Main House, a 90-seat Studio upstairs and a 140-seat Cabaret Space downstairs, plus bars on the ground and lower-ground floors.
The company also runs Soho Theatre Walthamstow in north-east London. Wikipedia says this is the former Walthamstow Granada, which opened as Soho Theatre Walthamstow on 1 May 2025 after a £30 million redevelopment.
On booking, the visit page gives the box office as 020 7478 0100 and tickets@sohotheatre.com, and says the building is open Monday to Friday from 10am and Saturday from noon until late, and closed on Sunday. The homepage says members get free tickets, late-night bar access and priority booking. On the check date its access page listed three upcoming shows with prices from £15, £17 and £25.

Three spaces per Wikipedia, including a 140-seat Cabaret Space. Box office 020 7478 0100. Closed Sundays per its visit page.
Phoenix Arts Club: nightly cabaret and drag off Charing Cross Road
Phoenix Arts Club, at 1 Phoenix Street, WC2H 8BU, describes itself as independent and created by entertainers for entertainers. Its homepage says it runs nightly shows with several acts on the bill, covering cabaret and variety, including drag, musical theatre, burlesque, aerial acts and comedy.
The format is set out on the homepage: doors open at 9pm for a showtunes singalong, and after the show the room becomes a late cocktail bar it calls Post Show. That makes it suited to a later date rather than an early evening one.
It is a members' club, but the site says anyone who buys a ticket gets temporary membership for that night. Tickets start from £15 and the club says advance booking is essential. Yearly membership starts at £150, and the club says money raised is reinvested in the club.
The site says the club is celebrating more than 35 years, receives public funding from Arts Council England and welcomes about 100,000 cabaret fans a year. Its homepage gives no accessibility information; it lists customercare@phoenixartsclub.com for questions.

Royal Vauxhall Tavern: the listed home of London drag
The Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Kennington Lane is the venue with the most documented drag history in this guide. Wikipedia says it was built between 1860 and 1862 on land that had been part of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and opened as a pub in 1863.
Wikipedia records that drag shows drew local gay men there after the Second World War, and that by 1975 a kidney-shaped bar doubled as a stage. Paul O'Grady performed there as Lily Savage for eight years, four times a week, and Lily Savage was among 11 people arrested in a police raid in 1987.
Wikipedia also records that the club night Duckie, hosted by Amy Lamé, ran on Saturdays from the mid-1990s and held its last night at the tavern in 2022, and now runs at the Eagle in Vauxhall. The building was sold to developers in November 2014 and, after an application by the campaign group RVT Future, became Grade II listed on 8 September 2015.
We could not confirm the tavern's current programme, ticketing or opening hours. The web address we tried showed event listings from 2018 and unrelated content, so this guide does not cite it. Check the venue's current social channels or call ahead before planning a date around a specific show.

Bethnal Green Working Men's Club: ticketed nights in the East End
Bethnal Green Working Men's Club is at 42-46 Pollard Row, E2 6NB, and its site gives the phone number 020 7739 7170. The homepage points to a What's On page for listings and a Buy Tickets page, so expect to book specific nights in advance rather than drop in.
The homepage itself does not describe the programme, its history or its accessibility. It links to an Info and FAQs page, which refused our request on the check date, so we could not confirm age policy, door times or step-free access. Contact the club directly before you go, and read the individual event listing for the night you choose.
The club also offers venue hire and a mailing list, both linked from its homepage.

The Glory has closed; The Divine opens in Dalston
The Glory, at 281 Kingsland Road, E2 8AS, described itself as an East End pub and LGBTQ+ performance venue. On 14 October 2026 its own homepage said it has closed, in a message signed John, Jonny and Colin, and pointed visitors to a new venue, The Divine. Its film archive, gallery and blog links were still listed.
The Divine, at 33 Stoke Newington Road, N16 8BJ, calls itself London's newest queer venue and describes itself as an LGBTQIA+ bar and performance venue. It shares The Glory's phone number, 020 7684 0794. Its listings on the check date covered cabaret, drag and lip-sync competitions, club nights, theatre, film screenings, live concerts, stage readings, a live podcast and workshops such as life drawing.
The Divine's homepage lists opening from 5pm every day, with late closing on Friday and Saturday. Its page gave no accessibility information. Because it is new, expect hours and programming to settle over time and check before you travel.

Venues we could not verify
The Two Brewers in Clapham is often named alongside these venues, but its website did not respond when we tried to load it on 14 October 2026, so this guide gives no details for it. If it is on your list, look up its current programme and entry policy yourself.
The same applies to any venue not covered here: rather than repeat second-hand descriptions, this guide only includes what a venue's own page or Wikipedia stated on the check date.
Picking the right room for the date
If you want seats, a set start time and the option of captioned or BSL interpreted performances, Soho Theatre is the most predictable choice of the venues covered, and its access booking process is the most clearly documented.
If you want a late night with several acts and a bar afterwards, Phoenix Arts Club's stated format of a 9pm singalong, show and Post Show bar fits that, but book ahead, as it says advance booking is essential.
If you want an East End club night, Bethnal Green Working Men's Club and The Divine both publish listings; the Royal Vauxhall Tavern suits anyone interested in the history, once you have confirmed what is on. For safe ways home after a late show, see the getting-home guide linked below.
Before you go
- Book ahead: Phoenix Arts Club says advance booking is essential, and Bethnal Green Working Men's Club sells tickets per event.
- If you need step-free access, a wheelchair space or captions, contact the venue first; only Soho Theatre published access performance details on the check date.
- Check the night's listing for content notes and age limits, which the venue homepages did not state.
- Plan your route home before a late show, especially for venues that list closing at 2am or 3am.
- Do not travel to The Glory on Kingsland Road: its site says it has closed.
Questions people ask
- Is The Glory still open?

- Not in advance. Its site says non-members who buy a ticket get temporary membership for that night. Tickets start from £15, and yearly membership starts at £150.
- Which venue has the clearest access information?
- Soho Theatre. Its access page lists captioned, BSL interpreted, audio described and relaxed performances and touch tours, booked through a free Access Account that offers access prices and wheelchair spaces. The other venues' homepages gave no access details, so contact them directly.
- Why is the Royal Vauxhall Tavern important?
- According to Wikipedia, its drag shows drew local gay men after the Second World War, Paul O'Grady performed there as Lily Savage, and in 2015 it became the first UK building listed for its importance to LGBTQ history.
