Classical music and opera on a budget in London: young person schemes and rush tickets

Sources checked 27 October 2026 · 8 min read

Under-35s get the best deals. ENO gives 16 to 20s a free opera ticket per production and sells 21 to 34s tickets at £20 to £40. Young RBO offers £30 Main Stage tickets to 16 to 25s, Monday to Thursday. The LPO caps under-30s at £20, and Young Barbican tickets start at £6 for 16 to 29s. Over 35, try £16 lunchtime recitals or free concerts.

The short version

  • ENO at the London Coliseum: free opera ticket per production for ages 16 to 20, and £20 to £40 tickets for ages 21 to 34, both through free membership with limited numbers per performance.
  • Royal Ballet and Opera: Young RBO is free for 16 to 25s, with £30 Main Stage tickets on Monday to Thursday performances (exclusions apply) and Young RBO Nights from £1 to £30.
  • London Philharmonic Orchestra: under-30s never pay more than £20, with £10 or £15 tickets for selected concerts and no booking fees; Student Pulse tickets from £10.
  • Opera Holland Park (summer season only): free tickets for ages 7 to 18 and over-67s and £26 Inspire tickets online; its 2026 Monday Rush was £40, or £30 for under-30s.
  • Young Barbican: free for ages 16 to 29, tickets from £6, two discounted tickets per event.
  • Any age: Royal Ballet and Opera Recitals at Lunch are £16 on Mondays at 1pm, and LSO St Luke's Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts need no ticket.
  • Every price here is what each organisation's own page stated on 27 October 2026; numbers are limited, so book early.

How cheap classical tickets work in London

Full-price opera in London is expensive. Opera Holland Park, for example, says its schemes discount seats that would normally cost between £60 and £178. But almost every major company also runs a free sign-up scheme that unlocks a small allocation of much cheaper seats, and the main thing deciding what you pay is your age. The cut-offs differ: 20, 25, 29, 30 and 34 all appear below.

The schemes share a few rules. You sign up free online, often with your date of birth. You log in before you book, or the discounted price does not appear. You can usually buy two tickets, and your guest often has to be in the same age band. Numbers are limited per performance, and you may be asked for ID at the door. If you are planning a date, check that you both qualify before you book, since a guest outside the age band can make the cheap ticket invalid.

If you are over the age limits, there are still options: weekday lunchtime recitals, free concerts and rush schemes. The companion guide to free and cheap music in London covers free organ recitals and evensong in more depth; this guide focuses on tickets.

English National Opera at the London Coliseum

ENO has the most generous young person offer of the opera companies we checked. Its Under 21s membership is free for ages 16 to 20 and gives one free opera ticket per production for ENO shows, including relaxed performances. A guest also has to join Under 21s to get the free ticket. Children aged 5 to 15 get two free tickets for each full-paying adult. ENO says there are a limited number of free tickets per performance and asks you to book early.

For ages 21 to 34, the Under 35s scheme prices tickets between £20 and £40 across the auditorium, which ENO describes as up to 75 per cent off. You can buy up to two tickets per production; your guest should also be 21 to 34, and the box office can be contacted about a guest who is 35 or over. Sign-up is free, through a form asking for your name, email and date of birth, and you may be asked to prove your age when you attend.

Both schemes cover ENO opera productions at the London Coliseum only. They do not cover ENO work in Greater Manchester, non-ENO opera, musicals, concerts, dance or English National Ballet. You need to be logged into your ENO account to see the discounted seats.

    London Coliseum, St Martin's Lane

    London Coliseum, St Martin's Lane

Ages 16 to 20; one free opera ticket per production; guests must also be members; limited per performance.

Royal Ballet and Opera at Covent Garden

Young RBO is a free scheme for 16 to 25 year olds. Its headline offer is £30 tickets for Main Stage performances, with exclusions, and Young RBO Nights with discounted tickets between £1 and £30. You need to add your date of birth when you register and sign in to see the prices. Members can book up to two Young RBO tickets per performance, and the guest must also be 25 or under; IDs may be checked at the door.

The limits are specific. Young RBO tickets are for Monday to Thursday performances on the Main Stage only, not Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and not the Linbury Theatre. Boxes are excluded, and the page lists productions excluded entirely, including all performances of Parsifal, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Götterdämmerung, plus some opening nights. If the Young RBO category does not show when you book, it has sold out. Members also get priority booking one day before public sale, 10 per cent off in the shop and 20 per cent off selected tours.

For any age, Recitals at Lunch in the Crush Room at the Royal Opera House cost £16 and last about 45 to 50 minutes, starting at 1pm on Mondays. The run listed was 2 November 2026 to 26 April 2027, with dates including 2 November, 23 November, 7 December and 21 December. A weekday lunchtime recital is a short, inexpensive way to see inside the building. We could not find a current page for the company's Friday Rush, so we give no detail for it.

Orchestras: the LPO, the Barbican and the LSO

The London Philharmonic Orchestra's Under 30s scheme says you will never pay more than £20 a ticket, with £10 or £15 tickets for selected concerts and no booking fees. You can buy up to two tickets per concert, subject to availability, on selected seats; the highest-priced Front Stalls are excluded. It covers the London season at the Southbank Centre and St John's Waterloo. Sign up free and tick the Under 30s box; the page says your preference can take up to three days to activate, so do not leave it to the day. Book a Standard ticket and the discount applies in your basket. The page does not give an exact age cut-off and says photo ID may be needed.

For students, the LPO points to Student Pulse, with tickets from £10 for LPO concerts and no extra booking fees, and says tickets are limited. The LPO page does not set out who qualifies; that is on the Student Pulse site.

Young Barbican is open to everyone aged 16 to 29 and is free to join. It advertises tickets from £6, across art, music, film and theatre, and allows two discounted tickets per event, for you and one friend who is also 16 to 29. Not every event carries the discount, tickets are not transferable, and if you collect in person you need ID showing your age.

For any age, the LSO's Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts at LSO St Luke's on Old Street are free, need no ticket and start at 12.30pm, first come, first seated. Dates listed after today are 27 November 2026 and, in 2027, 8 January, 29 January, 19 February, 19 March, 9 April, 14 May, 4 June and 18 June. The 27 November, 19 March and 14 May concerts are Relaxed, designed for learning disabled and neurodiverse audiences, with everyone welcome. The LSO says they are not suitable for under-5s.

The Philharmonia, also based at the Royal Festival Hall, mentions only ticket discounts for Friends on its homepage; we found no young person scheme there to report.

  • London Philharmonic Orchestra: Under 30sorchestra ticket scheme

Southbank Centre and St John's Waterloo

Never more than £20; £10 or £15 for selected concerts; no booking fees; two per concert; Front Stalls excluded; up to three days to activate.

  • Young Barbicanarts ticket scheme

    Barbican, City of London

Free for ages 16 to 29; tickets from £6; you plus one friend aged 16 to 29; not every event; ID needed to collect in person.

  • LSO Free Friday Lunchtime Concertsfree concert

    LSO St Luke's, Old Street

Free, no ticket, 12.30pm on selected Fridays, first come first seated; next listed 27 November 2026 (Relaxed); not suitable for under-5s.

Opera Holland Park: summer opera in a park

Opera Holland Park performs in a summer season at its theatre in Ilchester Place, W8 6LU, in Holland Park. Its ticket schemes page lists more options than any other company here. Young people aged 7 to 18 get free tickets, and so do people over 67. Inspire tickets are £26 and sold online only, for people who would otherwise not be able to attend; the page says thousands are offered each season. An older 2021 note on the site gives £22, so treat £26 as the current figure.

For the 2026 season, the Monday Rush offered a strictly limited number of tickets at £40, or £30 for under-30s. That summer season has finished, and the page does not yet say whether the scheme or its prices will return in 2027. Blue Light tickets are half price for NHS, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Service, Metropolitan Police and Armed Forces staff, and for teachers, social workers and carers in Hammersmith and Fulham, Westminster, and Kensington and Chelsea. There is also an Under 30s scheme for offers on selected performances, with no prices stated.

The page does not set out booking deadlines or proof of eligibility for most schemes. The box office is on 0300 999 1000, 10am to 2pm Monday to Thursday, closed on bank holidays. Membership, from £90 a year, gives savings of up to £8 a ticket and no booking fees, which only pays off if you go several times.

  • Opera Holland Parkopera company and theatre

    Holland Park, W8

Free tickets for ages 7 to 18 and over-67s; Inspire £26 online; half-price Blue Light tickets; 2026 Monday Rush was £40, £30 for under-30s.

Making it work as a date

A lunchtime recital or a free Friday concert is low stakes: under an hour, cheap or free, and easy to follow with a walk or a coffee. An evening opera is a bigger ask. It is a longer evening with intervals, so it suits a second or third date better than a first, and it helps if you both know what you are going to see.

Match the scheme to both of you. If one of you is 24 and the other 27, Young RBO will not work for the pair, but Young Barbican and the LPO's Under 30s will. If you are both 21 to 34, ENO's Under 35s is the one to try. Over 35, the £16 Recitals at Lunch and the free LSO concerts remain, and Opera Holland Park's summer schemes are worth watching for.

Some sites would not let us read them. Wigmore Hall, the Southbank Centre, Kings Place and St Martin-in-the-Fields all returned access errors, and the BBC Proms and Royal Albert Hall pages were blocked, so we give none of their prices. All run schemes or cheap tickets worth checking on their own sites.

Before you go

  • Sign up in advance. The LPO says your Under 30s preference can take up to three days to activate, and every scheme needs you logged in before you book.
  • Check both ages. Young RBO guests must be 25 or under, ENO Under 35s guests should be 21 to 34, and Young Barbican guests 16 to 29.
  • Bring ID. ENO, Young RBO, the LPO and Young Barbican all say you may be asked to prove your age.
  • Check the day. Young RBO £30 tickets are Monday to Thursday only, and Opera Holland Park's schemes apply to its summer season.
  • Book early. Every company here says discounted tickets are limited per performance.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest way to see opera in London?
If you are 16 to 20, ENO gives you a free ticket per production at the London Coliseum. If you are 21 to 34, ENO's Under 35s tickets are £20 to £40. Opera Holland Park gives free tickets to ages 7 to 18 and over-67s. Royal Ballet and Opera's lunchtime recitals are £16 for anyone.
Does the Royal Opera House have cheap tickets for young people?
Yes. Young RBO is free for 16 to 25s and offers £30 Main Stage tickets for Monday to Thursday performances, with some productions and opening nights excluded, and Young RBO Nights at £1 to £30. You can book two per performance, and your guest must also be 25 or under.
Can I bring a date who is older than me on a young person ticket?
Usually not at the discounted price. Young RBO and Young Barbican require guests in the same age band, and ENO says an Under 35s guest should be 21 to 34, though it suggests contacting the box office about a guest aged 35 or over.
Are there cheap classical tickets for over-35s?
Yes, but fewer. Royal Ballet and Opera's Recitals at Lunch are £16 on Mondays at 1pm, the LSO's Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts are free with no ticket, and Opera Holland Park gives free tickets to over-67s in its summer season.
