First date ideas that aren't a bar

4 min read

'Drinks?' persists because it's easy to suggest, not because it's good. It pins two strangers to chairs, face to face, with nothing to react to except each other. The best first dates have a third thing — something to look at, walk through, or laugh about — so conversation happens sideways, the way it does between friends.

The shortlist

  • A gallery or museum, especially a weird small one. Built-in topics every three metres, and you learn how they see things.
  • A market — food, flowers, flea. Walking, grazing, pointing at things. The lowest-pressure format that exists.
  • A proper walk: botanical garden, river path, cemetery tour if you're both that kind of person. Side-by-side beats face-to-face for nerves.
  • Record or book shopping with a budget: £5 each, buy the other person the thing that made you think of their profile. Now you both own an artifact of the first date.
  • A matinee film plus a debrief coffee. The film gives you ninety minutes of shared experience and the coffee has a natural end time.
  • Board game café. Light competition reveals personality faster than any question.
  • A climbing gym intro session or roller disco — only if both of you are game to be bad at something. Being bad at things together is bonding at speed.
  • Why the exit matters

Every one of these has a graceful end built in: the market closes, the film ends, the coffee finishes. A defined ending protects a good date (leave wanting more) and a mediocre one (leave without the awkward negotiation). You can always extend a date that's going well. You can't gracefully shrink one that isn't.

    The real advice

Pick something you'd enjoy alone. If the date is wrong, you still had a good afternoon. If the date is right, they watched you enjoying your actual life — which is the most honest first impression there is.
