First Date Ideas in Manchester That Aren't a Bar: Galleries, Libraries, Markets and Film

Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 7 min read

Manchester has plenty of free first dates that aren't a bar. The Whitworth is open until 9pm on Thursdays, the John Rylands Library is free from Wednesday to Saturday, and the Science and Industry Museum is free every day. After that, browse the Northern Quarter's record shops and Afflecks, eat at Mackie Mayor, or see a film at HOME. Check each venue's closed days before you go.

The short version

  • The Whitworth on Oxford Road is free. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm and until 9pm on Thursdays, and it is closed on Mondays, including bank holiday Mondays.
  • The John Rylands Library at 150 Deansgate is free, with no booking required. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.40pm, and closed Sunday to Tuesday.
  • The Science and Industry Museum on Liverpool Road is free and open daily from 10am to 5pm. Building work means some galleries are closed, and the Air and Space Hall is permanently closed.
  • Manchester Art Gallery on Mosley Street is free and, according to Wikipedia, closed on Mondays. Its own site could not be read when this guide was checked.
  • In the Northern Quarter, Afflecks has been an indoor market of independent stalls since 1982, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia also names Piccadilly Records and Vinyl Exchange among the area's record shops.
  • Mackie Mayor is a food hall in Smithfield Market Hall, a Grade II-listed building from 1857–58 that reopened in 2017. HOME, on First Street, has five cinema screens, a 500-seat theatre, a studio and a gallery.

Why a non-bar first date works in Manchester

A gallery, library or museum gives a first date something to look at besides each other. It gives you an easy way into conversation and a natural point to decide whether to get food. Several of Manchester's best options are free, so nobody has to worry about who is paying before you have even sat down.

Days matter more than you might expect. The John Rylands Library is closed from Sunday to Tuesday, the Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery are closed on Mondays, and only the Whitworth stays open late, on Thursdays. Every detail below comes from the venues' own pages as read on 14 October 2026, except where Wikipedia is named. Hours change, so check again on the day.

The John Rylands Library: a Gothic reading room

The John Rylands Library is at 150 Deansgate, M3 3EH. Admission is free and no booking is needed. It is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.40pm, and it is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. The library's visitor rules allow no food or drink apart from bottled water, and no suitcases. Photography is allowed for personal use, but not with flash, reflectors or tripods.

According to Wikipedia, Enriqueta Rylands founded the library in memory of her husband, John Rylands. Basil Champneys designed it in a neo-Gothic style with Arts and Crafts elements, and it opened to readers on 1 January 1900. It is a quiet building, so it suits a slow walk round before you go somewhere else to talk properly. Deansgate has plenty of cafés nearby for afterwards.

Northern Quarter: records, Afflecks and an LGBTQ+ bookshop

Wikipedia places the Northern Quarter between Piccadilly station, Victoria station and Ancoats, centred on Oldham Street near Piccadilly Gardens. It describes the area as alternative in character, with independent shops, cafés and bars, and names Piccadilly Records and Vinyl Exchange as record shops popular with DJs and music fans. Neither record shop's opening hours could be confirmed from its own site, so check before you go. Browsing records is an easy first date: you can each pick something and explain why.

Afflecks stands where Church Street, Tib Street and Dale Street meet. Wikipedia describes it as an indoor market of about 73 independent businesses, mostly selling alternative clothing, records and retro games, with cafés inside. It opened as Affleck's Palace in 1982, took the name Afflecks in 2008, and marked its 40th anniversary in 2022. Its own site gives its address as 52 Church Street, M4 1PW, and its hours as 10.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

Queer Lit, an LGBTQ+ bookshop at 27 Great Ancoats Street, M4 5AJ, on the edge of the Northern Quarter, gives its hours as 9am to 7pm Monday to Wednesday and 9am to 11pm Thursday to Sunday. Those late hours make it one of the few shops where an evening browse is possible.

52 Church Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester M4 1PW

Indoor market of independent stalls, opened as Affleck's Palace in 1982 according to Wikipedia; open 10.30am–6pm weekdays, 10am–6pm Saturday, 11am–5pm Sunday.

Mackie Mayor: a food hall in a Victorian market

Mackie Mayor is in Smithfield Market Hall, which Wikipedia lists at 39–45 Swan Street, near the Northern Quarter. The hall was built in 1857–58, has been Grade II listed since 1973, and reopened as a food hall in 2017 after years of disuse. A cited Manchester Evening News report credits the team behind Altrincham Market with the restoration.

A food hall suits a first date because you can each choose your own food and there is no table service to wait for. Mackie Mayor's own website could not be reached when this guide was checked, and third-party listings disagree about its hours, so confirm them with the venue before you go.

Food hall in a Grade II-listed 1857–58 market hall, reopened in 2017; the venue's own site was unreachable when checked.

Putting a date together

On a Thursday, try the Whitworth's late opening and then food in town. From Wednesday to Saturday daytime, try the John Rylands Library, then a walk to Castlefield for the Science and Industry Museum, which is open every day. At weekends, start with records and Afflecks in the Northern Quarter, then eat at Mackie Mayor, and then decide whether a film at HOME is the next step.

Keep the first part short and leave room for an easy goodbye. If the date is going well, the next venue is rarely more than a short walk or tram ride away. If it isn't, a museum's closing time is a polite way to end.

Before you go

  • Avoid Mondays for galleries: the Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery are closed, and the John Rylands Library is closed Sunday to Tuesday.
  • The John Rylands Library allows no food or drink except bottled water, and no suitcases.
  • Book free timed tickets for the Science and Industry Museum in advance, as it recommends, and expect some galleries to be closed.
  • Confirm hours for Mackie Mayor, Manchester Art Gallery and the record shops directly, because their own pages could not be read when this guide was checked.
  • For a Thursday-evening Whitworth visit, use the Oxford Road entrance, as the Parkside entrance closes at 5pm until March 2027.
