First Date Ideas in Liverpool That Aren't a Bar: Galleries, a Cathedral and a Palm House

Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 6 min read

Liverpool has several first dates that aren't a bar. Tate Liverpool is free and open daily at its temporary home at Mann Island. FACT has free galleries and a Picturehouse cinema, and the Bluecoat has a gallery and a garden. Liverpool Cathedral is usually free to visit and has a tower you can climb, and Sefton Park's Palm House is free. Baltic Market suits a relaxed evening.

The short version

  • Tate Liverpool is based at RIBA North, Mann Island, while its Royal Albert Dock home is redeveloped. It is free, needs no booking and is open daily from 10am to 5.50pm.
  • FACT, at 88 Wood Street near Bold Street, has free galleries open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm, and a Picturehouse cinema open daily from midday.
  • The Bluecoat on School Lane is a Grade I-listed building more than 300 years old. Its gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, and its garden is open all year.

  • Sefton Park's Palm House is a free Victorian glasshouse, generally open 10am to 5pm, in Liverpool's largest public park.
  • Baltic Market, a street food market at Cains Brewery Village, opens Wednesday to Sunday from midday or 11am.

Why a non-bar first date works in Liverpool

A first date with something to look at takes the pressure off. You talk about a painting, a view or a film rather than interviewing each other across a table, and it is easy to decide afterwards whether to get food. Liverpool's centre has free galleries within walking distance of each other, and a large Victorian park is a short trip out.

Opening days vary more than you might expect. FACT's galleries are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, the Bluecoat is closed on Mondays except bank holidays, and the Palm House sometimes closes for private events. The hours below are the ones each venue published when this guide was checked. Confirm them on the day, especially around holidays.

Tate Liverpool at Mann Island

Tate Liverpool's usual home at the Royal Albert Dock is being redeveloped, and the gallery says it will reopen there in 2027. Until then it is at Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, Mann Island, L3 1BP.

Entry is free and you don't need to book. It is open Monday to Sunday from 10am to 5.50pm. When this guide was checked, Tate listed two closures: 17 November 2026 for staff training, and 24 to 26 December 2026. Being open seven days a week makes it one of the few reliable choices for a Monday or Tuesday date.

Because it is free and open late into the afternoon every day, Tate works well as a short first meeting: you can look round for half an hour and then decide together whether to carry on to food or a film.

Free, no booking; daily 10am–5.50pm; returning to the Royal Albert Dock in 2027.

FACT: free galleries and a cinema

FACT is at 88 Wood Street, L1 4DQ, near Bold Street. It is about a 12-minute walk from Lime Street station and five minutes from Central station. The building is open from 10am to 10pm on Mondays and Sundays and from 9am to 10pm from Tuesday to Saturday. The galleries are open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 6pm and are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Entry to the building and all exhibitions is free, with no booking needed.

The cinema inside is run by Picturehouse and is open daily from midday to 10pm. Evening, weekend and bank holiday adult tickets cost £15, and matinee adult tickets cost £13.50. Happy Monday adult tickets are £9.99, though not on bank holidays, and members, over-60s and students pay less.

The Picturehouse Bar is open daily from midday to 8pm and serves beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks. For coffee, breakfast or lunch, Moi Bakeshop is on site, open Mondays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm and Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm. A free exhibition followed by a film is an easy first date with a built-in topic of conversation. FACT is also one of the venues for Homotopia's 2026 festival.

The Bluecoat

The Bluecoat on School Lane, L1 3BX, is Liverpool's contemporary arts centre. Its Grade I-listed building is more than 300 years old and was founded as a charity school, and the Bluecoat describes itself as the UK's first arts centre.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm and is closed on Mondays, except bank holiday Mondays. The café and bistro, which serves homemade meals, opens at 10am from Tuesday to Saturday and at 11am on Sunday, closing at 5pm. The Bluecoat's site doesn't list admission prices for the gallery, so check individual listings or call 0151 702 5324.

The garden is open all year, along with the building's independent shops. A coffee in the garden is a calm way to start a first date. Homotopia, the city's LGBTQ+ arts festival, is based at the Bluecoat.

Liverpool Cathedral and its tower

Liverpool Cathedral is usually free to visit, and you don't need to book. It is open from 10am to 6pm every day, and on Sundays it is open for worship from 10am to midday. Last entry is 15 minutes before closing. The Welsford Bistro is open from 10am to 4.30pm from Monday to Saturday and from midday on Sundays.

The tower is the reason to go on a date. Its last entry is 4.30pm, from 10am on weekdays and Saturdays and from midday on Sundays, and it closes 30 minutes after last entry. The cathedral's page doesn't list a tower ticket price, so check the cathedral shop's booking page. The tower closes for bell ringing on some Sundays, including 1 November 2026, so check before you plan a Sunday visit.

The cathedral says it is about a 30-minute walk from most central Liverpool locations, and buses 82 and 86 stop nearby.

Sefton Park and the Palm House

Sefton Park covers about 235 acres and is the largest public park in Liverpool and the Liverpool City Region, according to Wikipedia. It opened on 20 May 1872 and is Grade I listed. It has a 7-acre lake, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, a bandstand and an iron bridge from 1873, so a walk round it gives you plenty to point at.

The Palm House is a Victorian glass dome in the park. Wikipedia says it opened in 1896, was damaged by a bomb in the 1941 Blitz, closed in the 1980s for safety reasons and reopened in September 2001 after a £3.5 million restoration. Statues of explorers, navigators and botanists stand at its eight corners. It holds a historic collection of plants from around the world, and admission is free.

The Palm House's site gives its hours as 10am to 5pm, with the café open from 10am to 4pm and the grounds from 8am to 5pm, and notes that hours may vary. It sometimes closes for private events, so check its site on the day. Inside the glasshouse is a good choice for a cold or rainy first date.
