Why Bristol works for a date that isn't a bar
A first date is easier with something to look at. In Bristol, the main museums, the harbourside arts venues and the old city market are all within walking distance of each other, so you can start in one place and move on if things go well, or end the date there if they don't.
Two of the best options cost nothing. Both city museums are free, the Clifton Suspension Bridge museum is free, and Brandon Hill is free and open all the time. All hours and prices below are as the venues published them on 14 October 2026. Check on the day, because times change for holidays and events.
Free museums: Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and M Shed
Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is on Queens Road, BS8 1RL, at the top of Park Street. Entry is free, and it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, closed on Mondays. The ground floor has Egyptian mummies and the exhibition gallery, the first floor has Alfred the Gorilla, a Romany wagon and dinosaurs, and the second floor has the art galleries, with paintings, pottery and glass. The museum notes that its British and World Wildlife galleries are closed until summer 2027.
Temporary shows give you something to talk about. On the check date the museum listed two Bristol Photo Festival 2026 shows under the title Time Machine, running to 9 May 2027, and The Secret Life of Colour, an exhibition about the role colour plays in our lives, from 24 October 2026 to 31 January 2027.
M Shed, on Princes Wharf, Wapping Road, BS1 4RN, tells the story of Bristol from prehistoric times to today, in galleries called Bristol People and Bristol Places. It is free, with donations welcome, and open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Some of its largest working exhibits, such as cranes and a steam engine, stand outside on the quay and can be seen even when the museum is closed, which makes it a good start or end point for a harbourside walk.

Harbourside: Arnolfini and Watershed
Arnolfini is a contemporary arts centre and registered charity at 16 Narrow Quay, BS1 4QA. Its visit page lists the galleries as open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm, with walk-ins welcome; the same page also carries out-of-date Covid and festive notices, so check before a midweek visit. The bookshop keeps the same hours. The Harbourside Bar, run by Bristol Beer Factory, has inside and outside seating and is listed as open 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 11pm Friday and Saturday and 9am to 10pm on Sunday.
Watershed, just across the water at 1 Canons Road, BS1 5TX, describes itself as a cultural cinema. It is open seven days a week. The box office opens at 12pm on Monday, 9.30am Tuesday to Friday and 10am at weekends, and closes 15 minutes after the last screening starts. The café-bar serves food until 8.30pm on Monday, 9pm Tuesday to Saturday and 8pm on Sunday. A film followed by food downstairs gives you something to talk about straight away, and Watershed says its nearest bus stops on The Centre are no more than two minutes' walk away. Ticket prices are not shown on its visit page, so check them when you book.
St Nicholas Market for lunch
St Nicholas Market, also known as St Nicks, says it has been trading since 1743 and has Bristol's largest collection of independent retailers. It sits in the old city around Corn Street. The council's page lists the indoor market as open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5pm, and the Bristol Indies' Market Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
The Street Food Market is listed for the first Friday of the month, 11am to 2.30pm. The council warns that outdoor trading days and times can change and points people to the market's Instagram and Facebook for updates. A lunchtime date suits the market well: walk the stalls, pick something each, and you have an easy topic of conversation. It is closed on Sundays.

Views: Brandon Hill and the Clifton Suspension Bridge
Brandon Hill, off Park Street at BS1 5RR, is described by the council as a hilly park and popular picnic spot with a nature reserve and views from Cabot Tower. There is no admission charge, and the park is open at all times. Note that the council says Cabot Tower is temporarily closed for essential maintenance. When it reopens, its normal hours are from 8am daily, closing at 7.15pm in October and 5.15pm from November to January. Parts of the park are scheduled ancient monuments.
For a longer outing, walk or take the bus to Clifton and cross the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which its trust says was Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first bridge. The bridge museum is on the Leigh Woods (North Somerset) side, open 10am to 5pm daily and always free. It has a film about how the bridge was built, objects from the archive and recorded stories from local people. The trust also runs Hard Hat Tours of the bridge's hidden vaults, which are ticketed, and says the most popular photo spot is at the base of the tower on the Clifton side.

A paid option: the SS Great Britain at Bristol Dockyards
If you want a bigger outing, Bristol Dockyards is the home of the SS Great Britain. The museum says that when the ship launched in 1843 it was the world's largest passenger ship and one of the first iron, propeller-driven ocean liners. The site also includes the Being Brunel museum and the historic dockyards, and it is open Tuesday to Sunday.
General admission is £22 per adult online or £25 on the door, and you can come back free for a year from your first visit. An Afternoon Saver ticket, valid from 2.30pm, costs £13 online or £15 on the door, which suits a shorter date. Go Aloft, a climb up the ship's rigging with views over the harbour, costs £35 for an adult with a day pass. The dockyards describe themselves as one of the city's largest indoor heritage attractions, which makes it a useful backup on a wet day.
