Tokyo Pride's festival fills the event plaza at Yoyogi Park over a June weekend, with the parade on Sunday 7 June in 2026 and talks and exhibitions running through the month. Shinjuku Ni-chome, the dense bar district, is where the non-profit akta volunteers give out condoms and leaflets on Friday evenings. Nearby, Pride House Tokyo Legacy, which describes itself as Japan's first permanent large LGBTQ+ centre, opened in Shinjuku in October 2020 and includes a community archive library. The free Yorisoi Hotline, 0120-279-338, is open daily from 10am to 10pm; press 2 for foreign-language support, though English and other languages are only available at some times.

The legal picture: Japan has no national recognition of same-sex marriage or civil partnerships. Five of the six high court rulings so far found the marriage ban unconstitutional (Sapporo, Tokyo and Fukuoka in 2024, and Nagoya and Osaka in 2025), but a Tokyo High Court ruling on 28 November 2025 upheld it. On 25 March 2026 the Supreme Court referred all six cases to its Grand Bench; no final ruling had been reported as of late March 2026. There is no national law banning discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity; the 2023 LGBT Understanding Promotion Act promotes understanding but does not prohibit discrimination.
