LGBTQ+ life in Sydney: the practical bits

Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, around Taylor Square, remains the reference point for Sydney's LGBTQ+ history. The City of Sydney has added LGBTIQA+ street signs and a plaque for the 78ers, the founders of Mardi Gras, and the annual parade still follows Oxford Street from Hyde Park towards Moore Park. In the inner west, the Inner West Pride Centre in Newtown, run by Twenty10, gives young people a community base. Anyone curious about the past can browse more than 100 oral history interviews from the Pride History Group, while ACON and QLife cover health information and peer support.

The legal picture

Same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since December 2017. Federal law has also banned discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status since 2013, though some religious organisations and religious schools keep exemptions.

• ACON — New South Wales' leading HIV and LGBTQ+ health organisation, established 1985; runs sexual health, mental health and ageing programs.
• Twenty10 and the Inner West Pride Centre — Housing, counselling and social support for LGBTIQA+ young people aged 12-25; runs the Inner West Pride Centre in Newtown.
• Pride History Group — Volunteer group recording Sydney's LGBTIQ history, with more than 100 oral history interviews.
• Star Observer — Describes itself as Australia's oldest and largest LGBTQIA+ media outlet, setting the agenda since 1979.
