Queer-Friendly Fitness in London: Boxing, Movement Classes, Trans Swims and Changing Rooms
Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 6 min read
London's most established LGBTQ+ fitness group is Knockout, a non-profit boxing club with pay-what-you-can classes in Covent Garden, Finsbury Park and Hackney Wick. The London LGBTQ+ Community Centre runs occasional movement sessions, and Gendered Intelligence runs a free monthly swim for trans people aged 11 to 25. Since April 2025 several gym operators have changed changing-room rules, so check a venue's current policy before you join.
The short version
- Knockout LGBTQ+ Boxing: Monday evenings in Covent Garden (last Monday of the month is FLINTA-only), Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings in Finsbury Park, Tuesday evenings in Hackney Wick. Sessions listed as pay what you can.
- Knockout and The Love Tank run free one-hour introductory boxing sessions for queer migrants and queer people of colour at Sobell Leisure Centre, N7; tickets are released about two weeks before each monthly session.
- The London LGBTQ+ Community Centre in Bankside listed a Queer Minds Movement pilates-inspired session on Monday 26 October 2026, 6pm–8pm; booking is required.
- Gendered Intelligence lists a free swim for trans, non-binary and gender-questioning young people aged 11–25 on the last Saturday of the month, 4.30pm–6.30pm.
- GLL (Better) at Ironmonger Baths (reported May 2025) and Virgin Active (August 2025) moved to changing rooms based on biological sex after the 16 April 2025 Supreme Court ruling; these reports are over a year old, so policies may have changed.
- Swimming clubs, running groups and team sports are in Kindrd's LGBTQ+ sports clubs guide; outdoor swimming and the Hampstead ponds are in the lidos guide.
Why a class can be better than a date
A regular class gives you the same faces every week and something to do with your hands. That takes the pressure off meeting people. Knockout's own member survey, reported by PinkNews in 2023, found that 82% of members joined to meet other queer people, more than joined to learn boxing (55%) or for fitness (52%).
This guide covers groups that run classes and sessions rather than competitive clubs. Out To Swim, London Frontrunners, Stonewall FC, the Kings Cross Steelers and the choirs are covered in Kindrd's LGBTQ+ sports clubs and social groups guide, and outdoor swimming is in the lidos guide. Everything below comes from organisers' own pages or listings read on 14 October 2026. Small volunteer-run groups change their schedules often, so confirm before you go.
Knockout: London's LGBTQ+ boxing club
Knockout describes itself as a friendly non-profit boxing club for London's LGBTQ+ community and friends, and is registered as Knockout LGBTQ Boxing Club CIC. PinkNews reported in 2023 that it had been meeting weekly since 2016. Its listings say classes are open to all abilities and fitness levels, and to allies as well as LGBTQ+ people.
The schedule on its booking page has Monday evenings in Covent Garden, with event listings naming Oasis Sports Centre; the last Monday of each month is set aside for an all-FLINTA session. Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings are in Finsbury Park, at Sobell Leisure Centre, and Tuesday evenings are in Hackney Wick. Upcoming sessions were listed as pay what you can.
You don't need any kit to start: wraps are provided for your first class, and after that you bring your own. Classes use bags and pads, so there is no actual fighting. Sparring is offered to those who want it but is never compulsory. The club's co-chair told PinkNews that the point is not winning, and that the club offers an alternative to queer social life built around parties, drugs and alcohol. Contact is lgbtko@gmail.com.

Free boxing introductions
The Love Tank runs free introductory boxing lessons with Knockout, only for queer migrants and queer people of colour aged 18 and over. Each one-hour session at Sobell Leisure Centre on Tollington Road, N7, is led by a Knockout instructor and includes a warm-up and cool-down; equipment is provided. The listing says the venue has accessible toilets and is wheelchair accessible. Sessions run 1pm to 2pm, and you should arrive ten minutes early for handwraps.
The booking rules are strict because places are limited. These sessions are not drop-in. There is a ten-minute grace period, after which the entrance is not monitored. If you miss three sessions without cancelling, you can't register again. Tickets for each monthly session are released about two weeks ahead, and the listing showed tickets off sale on the check date, with dates going back to December 2024, so the rules and schedule may have changed; check with the organiser.
Punch with Pride ran free, non-contact weekly sessions on Thursdays, 7.30pm to 8.30pm, at Queen Mother Sports Centre, 223 Vauxhall Bridge Road, Pimlico, from 25 September 2025, according to England Boxing. Equipment was provided and sign-up was via a form linked from its Instagram, @punch_with_pride. That article is a year old, so confirm the sessions are still running.

Movement and yoga: the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre
The London LGBTQ+ Community Centre at 60–62 Hopton Street in Bankside lists movement sessions alongside its other events. On the check date its events page listed Queer Minds Movement Sessions: Pilates on Monday 26 October 2026, from 6pm to 8pm, described as a pilates-inspired class to build strength and improve stability. No price was shown. The centre says you need to book a ticket for its events unless stated otherwise.
The centre has run LGBTQ+ morning yoga in the past, but the current events page showed no yoga, and we could not open an older listing to confirm dates or prices. If you are after a regular queer yoga class, check the centre's page each month rather than relying on older listings.

Trans-inclusive swimming
Gendered Intelligence, the trans-led charity, lists an in-person swimming session in London for young trans, non-binary and gender-questioning people aged 11 to 25. It runs on the last Saturday of the month from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and is free. The page doesn't give the venue publicly or describe booking; questions go to youthwork@genderedintelligence.co.uk.
For adults, Lewisham Council's page on LGBT venues and groups lists TAGS, a swimming group for trans and non-binary people, at Glass Mill Leisure Centre, priced at £5 a session. That page was published in June 2021 and gives no times, so treat it as a lead to follow up rather than a current timetable.
We could not find a current council-run trans swimming session in London with a published timetable. Out To Swim, the LGBTQ+ swimming and water polo club, is covered in Kindrd's sports clubs guide.

Changing rooms: what has changed since April 2025
On 16 April 2025 the UK Supreme Court ruled in For Women Scotland v The Scottish Ministers that 'man', 'woman' and 'sex' in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex. Wikipedia's summary notes that the court said trans people keep their protection against discrimination and harassment under the separate characteristic of gender reassignment.
Some London operators have changed their rules since then. The Islington Tribune reported on 30 May 2025 that GLL, which runs Better leisure centres including Ironmonger Baths for Islington Council, had asked customers to use changing rooms and toilets matching their biological sex. Islington councillors criticised the move, and GLL said all customers were welcome and that it was waiting for further guidance. PinkNews reported that Virgin Active updated its policy in August 2025 in the same way, and that the Good Law Project announced a legal challenge on 15 January 2026.
In practice, if changing rooms matter to you, ask before you buy a membership. Ask what the current policy is, whether there are individual cubicles or a gender-neutral changing area, and whether you can change at home. Policies are still moving while statutory guidance is being finalised, so a page or staff answer from last year, including the 2025 reports above, may no longer apply.
Before you go
- Knockout provides wraps only for your first class; buy your own after that.
- The Love Tank boxing introductions are not drop-in, and three no-shows without cancelling block future booking, so cancel if you can't make it.
- Book a ticket for events at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre unless the listing says otherwise.
- Ask a gym or pool about its changing-room policy and facilities before you pay for a membership.
- Small groups change schedules often: check Instagram or the booking page the week you go.
Questions people ask
- Do I need boxing experience to join Knockout?
- No. Knockout says its classes are open to all abilities and fitness levels. Wraps are provided for your first class, classes use bags and pads, and sparring is optional.
- Is there a trans swimming session in London?
- Gendered Intelligence lists a free monthly swim for trans, non-binary and gender-questioning people aged 11 to 25. For adults, Lewisham Council has listed the TAGS group at Glass Mill Leisure Centre at £5, but that page dates from 2021, so contact the group first.
- Can trans people use changing rooms at London leisure centres?
- It depends on the operator. GLL at Ironmonger Baths was reported in May 2025, and Virgin Active in August 2025, to have moved to rules based on biological sex. Those reports are over a year old and policies may have changed, so ask the venue directly about its current policy and private changing options.
- Is Knockout only for LGBTQ+ people?
- Knockout describes itself as a club for London's LGBTQ+ community and friends, and its listings say allies are welcome. The last Monday session each month is FLINTA-only.
