London Lidos and Outdoor Swimming for a Date: Prices, Seasons and Rules, Checked
Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 8 min read
A swim makes a low-key date: an hour in the water, then a coffee. London Fields Lido is heated all year; Brockwell and Parliament Hill stay open in winter; Tooting Bec, the Serpentine, the Mixed Pond and Beckenham Place lake are seasonal. The men's and ladies' ponds on Hampstead Heath remain trans inclusive under a City of London decision of June 2026. Prices and rules below are as each operator publishes them.
The short version
- London Fields Lido is a 50-metre pool that Better describes as heated year-round; an adult swim is £6.40 for non-members, according to its prices page.
- Brockwell Lido is now run by Active Lambeth, which lists an adult Lido Swim at £9.50 and a child swim at £6.00.
- Parliament Hill Lido is a 60-metre unheated pool open 365 days a year; the City of London lists adult winter entry at £5.00 and summer day sessions at £8.80.
- The three Hampstead Heath bathing ponds cost £5.00 for adults; the City of London does not admit children under 8, and has said the men's and ladies' ponds stay trans inclusive.
- Tooting Bec Lido, the Serpentine Lido and the Hampstead Mixed Pond close to the public in winter; Beckenham Place Park's lake is pre-booked through PTP Coaching.
- From 1 October 2026 the Heath's swimming facilities take cashless payments only, according to the City of London.
Why a swim can work as a date
A swim gives a date a clear shape. You meet at the gate, swim for as long as either of you likes, and then decide whether to stretch it into a coffee or a walk. Most of the places below have a cafe on site or in the park around them, and none of them needs a dinner reservation.
It is also a date that asks for a little trust. You will be in swimwear, possibly in cold water, and probably in changing rooms that are either single-sex or shared. If that is a lot for a first meeting, a swim is often a better second or third date. It is worth saying in advance which place you have in mind and asking the other person what they are comfortable with, rather than springing it on them.
Each section below sticks to what the operator says on its own website as of 14 October 2026. Where a page is silent on something, such as heating or age rules, this guide says so rather than guessing. Hours at outdoor pools change week by week with the light and the season, so check the timetable on the day.
Heated and all-year: London Fields Lido
London Fields Lido in Hackney is the warm option. Better, which runs it, describes an Olympic-sized 50-metre outdoor pool with water heated year-round, and its page displayed a water temperature of 24 degrees when checked. For the week of 12 October 2026 it listed opening hours of 6.30am to 9pm every day.
Prices on Better's page: an adult (16 and over) swim is £6.40 for non-members at peak and off-peak times, or £4.55 for Pay As You Go members. Junior prices cover ages 3 to 15, at £3.50 off-peak and £3.75 peak for non-members. Better defines peak as 6.30am to 9am and 4pm to 9pm on weekdays, and 6.30am to 1pm at weekends. Concessions are available for people on certain benefits, disabled people and carers, and over-60s, with proof required.
Because lane swimming runs daily, an evening session after work is a realistic plan here, which is less true of the unheated pools in winter.
Hackney
50-metre outdoor pool, heated year-round according to Better; open 6.30am to 9pm daily in mid-October 2026.
Brockwell Lido, under new management
Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill has changed hands. The Brockwell Lido Users group says the lido is owned by Lambeth Council and, from 1 July 2026, run by Active Lambeth, the council's leisure service; it was previously run by Fusion Lifestyle. The users group mentions early teething problems with the new booking system and account set-up.
Active Lambeth describes a 50-metre outdoor pool open all year round. It does not say whether the water is heated; it links instead to live pool temperatures and notes that junior members may only swim when the water is 15°C or above. A Lido Swim is listed at £9.50 for adults and £6.00 for children, and a winter swim-only seasonal membership running 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 costs £140.
Swim times are published week by week and shorten through the autumn. For 12 to 18 October 2026 Active Lambeth lists 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays and 7.30am to 3pm at weekends; by 26 October to 1 November weekday swimming ends at 4.30pm. The page itself says new times are coming and gives a phone number to confirm, so treat these as a guide only. Swims are booked online through Active Lambeth.

Herne Hill
50-metre outdoor pool open all year, run by Active Lambeth since July 2026; adult swim £9.50 as listed.
Parliament Hill Lido on Hampstead Heath
The City of London describes Parliament Hill Lido as a 60-metre open-air, unheated, chlorinated pool, open 365 days a year including bank holidays, with longer hours in summer than in winter. Exact times are on its swimming opening times page. Wikipedia dates the lido to 1938.
Prices, valid to 31 March 2027 according to the City of London: in winter an adult pays £5.00, concessions and 16 to 17 year olds £3.00, and juniors aged 5 to 15 £1.50. In summer, morning and afternoon sessions cost £8.80 for adults, while breakfast and evening sessions are £5.00. Under-16s and over-60s swim free before 9.30am with proof of age.
Evening sessions are for adults 18 and over only, and under-16s must be with an adult. There is a sauna in winter only, for adults; tickets are sold in person per one-hour session, 30 places a session, and a swimming ticket is required. Bookable sessions run only in summer, from around late May to early September; drop-in sessions also run and can fill quickly.
Gospel Oak
60-metre unheated pool, open every day of the year; winter adult entry £5.00 according to the City of London.
The Hampstead Heath bathing ponds and their access policy
Hampstead Heath has three bathing ponds, all run by the City of London: the Highgate Men's Pond, the Kenwood Ladies' Pond and the Hampstead Mixed Pond. Single entry to any of them is £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for concessions and under-16s. The men's and ladies' ponds are open all year, with shorter hours in winter. The Mixed Pond swims from April to October; the City of London says its last public session before winter is Sunday 25 October 2026, reopening in spring 2027.
On access: on 4 June 2026 the City of London's Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen's Park Committee and its Policy and Resources Committee agreed that the Ladies' Pond (for women) and the Men's Pond (for men) will remain trans inclusive, with the Mixed Pond open to everyone. A report of the decision gives the consultation as more than 38,000 responses, 86% of which supported keeping the existing arrangements, and says toilet and shower upgrades with more private cubicles are planned at all three ponds. Wikipedia records that trans women were confirmed as able to use the women's pond in 2017. The individual pond pages refer to a separate Bathing Ponds Access Policy rather than reproducing it.
The ponds are less suited to a spontaneous date with children in tow: no one under 8 is admitted, including to the meadows, children aged 8 to 15 must be with an adult (two children per adult at most), and every child takes a swim test on each visit. All three ponds have lifeguards, ladders and a hoist into the water. There are no lockers; the City of London says only floating dry bags may go into the water. The Ladies' Pond has an Upper Meadow for blankets and small picnics during opening hours.

Seasonal swims: Tooting Bec Lido and the Serpentine
Tooting Bec Lido is the big one. Places Leisure describes it as the UK's largest freshwater outdoor pool at 91 metres long, and says the pools are unheated. Wikipedia gives its opening as 28 July 1906 and notes that the South London Swimming Club has exclusive use in winter. When checked, Places Leisure's timetable showed the lido closed with no public sessions in mid-October; its news item on the 2026 season gave a reopening of Friday 1 May. It recommends booking ahead and says bookings are non-refundable. Prices were not shown on the page checked, so they are left out here.
The Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park is run by The Royal Parks. Its booking page says the lido opens at weekends from mid-May and daily from June to mid-September, closing for winter; it gave Thursday 24 September as the final day of the season. Sessions run 10am to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 6pm. A session costs £6.50 for adults and £2.40 for children aged 3 to 15, a full day £8.40, and after 4pm £2.50. Booking online is recommended, with walk-ups possible at quiet times. You do not need to join the Serpentine Swimming Club to swim, according to The Royal Parks.
The Royal Parks sets supervision ratios for under-16s, who need a competent swimmer aged 18 or over with them. The Serpentine Lido Cafe, also listed by The Royal Parks, is open 8am to 4pm daily according to the swimming page.
Tooting Bec Lidolido
Streatham
91-metre unheated pool; closed to the public in winter, reopened 1 May for the 2026 season according to Places Leisure.
Serpentine Lidolido
Hyde Park
Open-water lido, mid-May to mid-September; adult session £6.50 as listed by The Royal Parks.
Beckenham Place Park's swimming lake
Beckenham Place Park in Lewisham has a swimming lake that Wikipedia says was re-established as part of a £6.8 million regeneration and opened for swimming in 2019. The park's own site says the lake is operated by PTP Coaching, with pre-booked swimming and paddleboarding sessions. The park itself is open 24 hours a day.
Neither the park's lake page nor PTP's Beckenham page stated a season, session length, price or age rule when checked; PTP's page showed a lake temperature last updated on 1 May 2026 and linked to a booking system. Because those details are not published on the pages read for this guide, they are left out. If you want this one, check PTP's booking page or email the operator before suggesting it to a date.

Before you go
- Check the day's timetable: Active Lambeth and the City of London both publish hours that change through the season, and Brockwell's page says new times are coming.

- Look up the water temperature first at the unheated pools; Tooting Bec, Brockwell and PTP all link to temperature readings.
- Bring a lock and a floating dry bag for the Heath ponds, which have no lockers.
- Ask your date in advance which pool and which changing arrangement they are comfortable with.
