City Farms and Urban Wildlife in London for a Date: Free Farms and a Nature Park
Sources checked 27 October 2026 · 7 min read
London's city farms are free to visit and run by small charities. Kentish Town City Farm, founded in 1972 and the first in the UK, opens daily. Mudchute on the Isle of Dogs covers 32 acres with over 100 animals. Hackney, Vauxhall and Spitalfields farms close on Mondays, and Surrey Docks opens every day. For wildlife rather than goats, Camley Street Natural Park sits between King's Cross and St Pancras.

Why a city farm works for a date
A city farm is one of the cheapest and least pressured dates in London. It costs nothing, it takes an hour or so, and there is always something to look at when the conversation pauses. Goats and pigs do a lot of the social work for you.
City farms are also community projects, not attractions. Most are small charities that run on volunteers, donations and their own cafés and shops, and they exist mainly for the neighbourhoods around them, including schools and young people. That shapes how to visit: go in daytime, expect families, buy a coffee or put something in the donation box, and do not expect a polished day out.
Social Farms and Gardens, the UK charity that supports community farms and gardens, says there are more than 200 city and school farms across the country, and its member map is a useful way to find one near you.
Every opening time, price and address here comes from the farm's own website, read on 27 October 2026. Where a home page did not say something, such as a station or a founding date, we say so. Farm hours change with the seasons and with staffing, so check on the day.
North London: Kentish Town and Freightliners
Kentish Town City Farm describes itself as the UK's first city farm, founded in 1972. Its site says it is open every day from 9am to 5pm, that entry is free, and that no booking is needed for a general visit. It mentions guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits, goats and donkeys.
The farm is at 1 Cressfield Close, off Grafton Road, NW5 4BN. Its home page did not name a station, so use TfL's journey planner. It also lists ponies, which give ticketed pony rides for children at weekends.
Freightliners City Farm on Sheringham Road, N7 8PF, describes itself as a community space in the heart of Islington, run as a charity and free to visit. Its home page did not list opening hours, animals or a station, and points to a separate visit page, so check there before you go.

East London: Mudchute, Hackney and Spitalfields
Mudchute Park and Farm is the big one. The Mudchute Association, a registered charity, says the site covers 32 acres of countryside on the Isle of Dogs, with more than 100 animals, and that it is open every day and free. It does not charge admission. Its home page did not give hours or a station, and its opening times page would not load for us, so check its Getting Here page. The address is Pier Street, E14 3HP.
Because Mudchute is open park as well as farmyard, it suits a longer walk.
Hackney City Farm, at 1a Goldsmiths Row, E2 8QA, is a small community charity (registered number 291211). Its site gives the farmyard as open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm, and closed on Mondays except bank holidays. It is free to visit.
Spitalfields City Farm on Buxton Street, E1 5AR, gives free entry Tuesday to Sunday. Its site lists winter hours of 10am to 4pm during GMT and summer hours of 10am to 4.30pm during BST, so the time shifts with the clocks. Its home page did not list its animals or a station.

South London: Vauxhall and Surrey Docks
Vauxhall City Farm is at 165 Tyers Street, SE11 5HS, which its site describes as a ten-minute walk from Oval Underground station. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10.30am to 4pm, with last entry at 3.45pm. Entry is free, with a suggested donation of £4 if you can.
The farm lists pigs, alpacas, goats, sheep, an aviary of birds, chickens, turkeys, rabbits and guinea pigs, and a farm cat. It also lists a riding school, but its home page gave no detail about it. The site mentions a 50th anniversary appeal.
Surrey Docks Farm is at South Wharf, Rotherhithe Street, SE16 5ET. Its site says the farm is open and free to visit from 10am to 4pm every day, including bank holidays, with a volunteer-run farm shop that closes from 1pm to 2pm. It keeps goats, sheep, pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and a pony, plus several beehives, and it is also celebrating 50 years. Its home page did not name a station.
Surrey Docks is the farm to pick if you want the widest range of animals and a visit on any day, bank holidays included.

Urban wildlife: Camley Street Natural Park
If you would rather watch wild things than feed tame ones, Camley Street Natural Park is the central London answer. Run by London Wildlife Trust, it sits on the Regent's Canal between King's Cross and St Pancras, at 12 Camley Street, N1C 4PW.
The Trust describes woodland, grassland and wetland habitats, including ponds, a reedbed and marshy areas, along with a visitor and learning centre, the Kingfisher Café, a pond-dipping platform and a canal viewpoint. It opens 10am to 4pm from October to March and 10am to 5pm from April to September. The page did not state whether entry is free, and did not name a station, though King's Cross St Pancras is the obvious one given its location.
Camley Street works as a short stop rather than a whole date. It pairs well with a canal walk, which we cover in our Regent's Canal guide. For larger wild spaces, such as Walthamstow Wetlands and Woodberry Wetlands, see our wetlands guide.

King's Cross, Camden
Canal-side ponds, reedbed and woodland, with a café and canal viewpoint. 10am to 4pm October to March, 10am to 5pm April to September.
How to visit well
These are working farms with their own rules, usually posted at the gate. Follow staff instructions, wash your hands after touching animals, and do not feed anything unless the farm says you may. Most farm websites point to their own rules or visit pages, which are worth a quick read.
Because nearly all of them are free and run on thin budgets, the decent thing is to spend a little: a coffee in the café, something from the farm shop, or a donation. Vauxhall states a suggested amount; others leave it to you.
Many city farms also take volunteers, which is a good way to meet people in your area outside the apps. Their websites list volunteering alongside visiting, and our guide to meeting LGBTQ+ people in London without the apps has more ideas in the same spirit.
For timing, aim for a weekday or a weekend morning. School holidays and weekend afternoons are the farms' busiest times, and most close by 4pm or 4.30pm, earlier than many people expect. Mondays are worth avoiding: Hackney, Vauxhall and Spitalfields all close that day.
Choosing between them
If you want the biggest space and the most animals, go to Mudchute. If you want to visit any day of the week, go to Kentish Town or Surrey Docks, both of which say they open every day. If you want somewhere central and short, Camley Street is a few minutes from King's Cross.
If you want an easy Tube journey, Vauxhall says it is ten minutes' walk from Oval. If you want a canal walk alongside, Camley Street is on the Regent's Canal.
Whichever you choose, check the farm's own site on the morning, because closures for weather, animal health or events are common and are not always shown far ahead.
Before you go
- Avoid Mondays at Hackney, Vauxhall and Spitalfields, which are closed that day.
- Most farms close by 4pm or 4.30pm: plan a morning or early afternoon.
- Bring a little cash or a card for a donation or the café; entry is free.
- Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy.
- Check the farm's own site on the day for closures.
