LGBTQ+ life in Birmingham: the practical bits

The Gay Village on Hurst Street, in the city centre, is where most of Birmingham's LGBTQ+ venues sit. The community guide BrumOutLoud names the Birmingham LGBT Centre at 151 Hurst Street as a hub for more than 40 independent groups and services, and lists peer groups such as TransBrum and Café Queer and the youth group Out Central. SHOUT has run year-round LGBTQIA+ arts programming for almost 15 years and is now building the Birmingham Queer Archive of oral histories. Birmingham Pride is held around the late May bank holiday weekend; the parade starts in Victoria Square and is free to watch (2027: Saturday 29 May, gathering from 11am, moving from noon), though the cost of entering the parade varies by category.

The legal picture

As of 2026, same-sex marriage has been legal in England since March 2014 (Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013). The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender reassignment. Since the UK Supreme Court's ruling in For Women Scotland v The Scottish Ministers (16 April 2025), 'sex' in the Act means biological sex, and some single-sex services may lawfully exclude trans people.
