LGBTQ+ life in Amsterdam: the practical bits

Amsterdam's queer geography is compact. Reguliersdwarsstraat has been the main gay street since bars multiplied in the late 1970s and 1980s, Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat hold older venues and the leather scene, and Amstel and Rembrandtplein carry the brown-café tradition. In the centre, the Homomonument beside Westerkerk, unveiled in 1987, stands next to the Pink Point information kiosk, and IHLIA keeps an LGBTI archive inside OBA Oosterdok. COC Amsterdam, founded in 1946, still runs a Switchboard helpline. Pride Amsterdam falls around the first weekend of August, with the Canal Parade on the first Saturday.

The legal picture

Same-sex marriage has been legal in the Netherlands since 2001. Since 2023 Article 1 of the Constitution lists sexual orientation as a prohibited ground of discrimination, and trans people can change the gender on their birth certificate with a statement from a doctor, psychologist or psychotherapist (possible since 1985, without surgery or sterilisation since 2014).

• COC Amsterdam — Advocacy group founded in 1946; runs a Switchboard helpline, community meeting places and school programmes.
• IHLIA LGBTI Heritage — LGBTI archive and library at OBA Oosterdok; exhibitions and book department free to visit, materials viewed on site.
• Homomonument — Memorial unveiled in September 1987 by Westerkerk, honouring persecuted LGBTI people; the Pink Point information kiosk stands beside it.
• Man tot Man — Sexual health information and Testlab online testing for men who have sex with men; initiative of STI-AIDS Netherlands and GGD health services.
• Trans United Clinic (GGD Amsterdam) — Free, anonymous STI and HIV tests, PrEP consultations and vaccinations for trans and gender-diverse people; GGD Amsterdam information line +31 20 555 5911, Monday–Friday 9 am–5 pm.
