Hillcrest is San Diego's established LGBTQ+ neighbourhood; a City of San Diego planning study traces its change into the city's primary LGBTQ+ area between 1970 and 1990. Residents gather at the Pride flag at University Avenue and Normal Street, and San Diego Pride's parade runs through Hillcrest each July before a festival in Balboa Park. The San Diego LGBT Community Center on Centre Street provides behavioural health, youth services and free HIV testing on weekdays, while Lambda Archives on Park Boulevard keeps local queer history, with research visits by appointment.

As of 2026: California's Fair Employment and Housing Act and Unruh Civil Rights Act bar discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and businesses. Federal law (Bostock, 2020) separately bars sexual-orientation and gender-identity discrimination by employers with 15 or more employees; Obergefell (2015) protects same-sex marriage.

• The San Diego LGBT Community Center — Began in 1971, incorporated 1973; offers behavioral health, housing, youth, senior and transgender services from 3909 Centre Street.
• The Center: Sexual Health and Wellness — Free anonymous HIV testing weekdays, plus STI screenings, PrEP and PEP information and HIV support groups.
• Family Health Centers of San Diego: Gay Men's Health — Free confidential HIV testing, low-cost STI tests and PrEP navigation, with programs designed for gay men of color.
• Lambda Archives of San Diego — Collects and shares LGBTQ history of San Diego and nearby regions; holds oral histories, photographs and newspapers at 4545 Park Boulevard.
