The legal picture: As of 2026, Germany has allowed same-sex marriage since 1 October 2017. Since 1 November 2024 the Self-Determination Act lets people who are German citizens, or foreign nationals with certain residence rights, change their legal gender entry and first name by declaration at the registry office, after a three-month notice period; the Basic Law does not expressly name sexual identity, but the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) prohibits discrimination on grounds of sexual identity at work and in everyday dealings such as shops, services and housing.
