Bristol's LGBTQ+ Scene for a Date: Old Market, Frogmore Street, Pride and Getting Home
Sources checked 14 October 2026 · 8 min read
Bristol's LGBTQ+ venues cluster in two places: Old Market, east of Cabot Circus and called the Village, and Frogmore Street off Park Street, called the Strip. Bristol Pride has published its 2027 dates: a festival from 26 June to 11 July, with Pride Day on Saturday 10 July. For under-26s, OTR runs Freedom groups. First runs night buses through the city centre on many routes.
The short version
- Old Market is known as Bristol's Gay Village. Visit Bristol lists The Phoenix, Bristol Bear Bar, Old Castle Green, the Old Market Tavern and the Old Market Assembly there.
- Frogmore Street, off Park Street near Bristol Beacon, is called the Strip. Queenshilling is at 9 Frogmore Street, and OMG and OMG Bar are on the same street.
- The Old Market Assembly at 25 West Street is a bar and restaurant with its own fringe theatre, The Wardrobe Theatre, which makes it a good choice for a first date where you want to eat before or after a show.
- Bristol Pride 2027 runs from 26 June to 11 July, with Pride Day on Saturday 10 July. The 2026 Pride Day was held on The Downs, and 2026 General Admission cost £18.50.
- OTR, which is registered at 8-10 West Street in Old Market, runs Freedom, an LGBTQIA+ youth programme for 11 to 25 year olds. Its 18-25 group meets weekly.
- Travelwest lists First night buses running between 11pm and 4am. Several, including the 24, 48, 49, 70, 75, 76 and m1, are listed as running Monday to Sunday.
- Bristol City Council says hackney carriages are painted Bristol Blue and can be hailed, while private hire cars must be booked through a licensed operator.
Two clusters: the Village and the Strip
Bristol's queer scene splits between two areas that are about a twenty-minute walk apart through the centre. Visit Bristol calls Old Market 'The Village' and describes it as focused on community, pubs and events. It sits near Cabot Circus shopping centre and Temple Meads station. Wikipedia, citing local sources, says Old Market has in recent years become a centre of Bristol's gay scene and that most pubs and bars on West Street are either gay-run or LGBT-friendly.
The second cluster is Frogmore Street, which Visit Bristol calls 'The Strip'. It runs off Park Street, next to the city centre and Bristol Beacon. Bristol Pride's own venue list splits venues the same way: bars in the Village, bars and clubs on the Strip.
Old Market has a long history apart from its bars. Wikipedia says there is documentary evidence of a market on the site from the mid-12th century, that the area declined after the main shopping moved to Broadmead and new roads cut it off from the centre, and that it was declared a conservation area in 1979. Many at-risk buildings have since been restored, so a short walk along West Street before you meet gives you something to talk about.

Old Market venues for a first drink or a show
For a date that is not only about drinking, the Old Market Assembly is the easiest pick. Its site gives its address as 25 West Street, Old Market, BS2 0DF. It is open Monday to Wednesday 4pm to 10.30pm, Thursday 4pm to 11pm, Friday 4pm until late, Saturday 12pm until late and Sunday 11.30am to 10pm. The restaurant serves Monday to Friday 5pm to 9pm and 12pm to 9pm at weekends. The venue says it has seasonal small plates, a pre-theatre menu and pizzas, and that The Wardrobe Theatre, which it calls Bristol's leading fringe theatre, puts on theatre, comedy and family shows. Bristol Pride's list adds that it stands on the site of the former Flamingos nightclub, has a roof terrace and hosts many LGBT+ nights.
The Phoenix is, in Visit Bristol's words, a relaxed LGBT+ and queer-friendly pub at the entrance to Old Market. Bristol Pride's list places it behind the Future Inns hotel by the Cabot Circus car park, with a decked beer garden and food. It also hosts Don't Tell Your Mother, an indie-pop club night on the first Saturday of the month.
The Old Market Tavern is described by Bristol Pride as a traditional pub with a beer garden and conservatory, and it runs a Pride Quiz on the first Sunday of the month. A quiz is a useful format for a second date: you are on the same side from the start. Bristol Bear Bar, which Bristol Pride calls the only bespoke bear bar in the UK, is described by Visit Bristol as compact and friendly, with club nights and weekly drag cabaret. Visit Bristol also lists Old Castle Green, a pub on Old Market with quizzes, cabaret and themed nights.
Street addresses are not given on the Bristol Pride or Visit Bristol pages for most of these venues, so check each venue's own listings or map before you set a meeting point.

Frogmore Street for later nights
If the date runs late, Frogmore Street is where the clubs are. Queenshilling gives its address as 9 Frogmore Street, Bristol, BS1 5NA. Its site lists karaoke every Monday, with doors at 9pm and singing from 10pm, and club nights every Friday and Saturday with doors at 10pm. Its door policy is short: no racists, no homophobes and nobody behaving badly. It says it sometimes turns away tracksuits and certain sportswear, so dress up a little.
On access, Queenshilling says it has no official access to toilet facilities but welcomes disabled people and wheelchair users when it can, and asks people to message ahead or ask security on arrival. Bristol Pride calls it one of the city's longest-established gay venues and says it holds a monthly Pride fundraiser on the last Friday of the month.
OMG, also on Frogmore Street, is described by Bristol Pride as open Wednesday to Saturday, with a student night on Wednesday, chart pop on Thursday and Friday and its biggest night on Saturday. Visit Bristol calls it Bristol's largest LGBTQIA+ club and says it is popular with younger and student crowds. Its sister venue, OMG Bar, is nearby on the same street.

Bristol Pride: 2027 dates and what Pride Day costs
Bristol Pride is a registered charity, number 1166817, and calls itself a not-for-profit that relies on donations. Its site has published the 2027 dates: the festival runs from 26 June to 11 July 2027, and Pride Day is Saturday 10 July 2027. The 2027 venue and line-up had not been announced on the check date.
In 2026 Pride Day was held on The Downs, with a main stage, a cabaret stage, a dance stage, a circus tent, a community and expo area, and food and market stalls. Bristol Pride says more than 250 artists performed. The wider programme also included an official afterparty, the Parade March and the Queer Vision Film Festival.
Pride Day is ticketed. For 2026, General Admission cost £18.50 with booking fees included, a concession ticket was offered at the old Day Supporter price, and a 'True Cost' ticket was £52. Bristol Pride says the True Cost ticket included free First Bus travel in the Bristol zone all day, the Pride shuttle buses to and from The Downs, fast-track entry and 50p off drinks at the festival bars. It also says no one should be excluded because they cannot afford it, and that it subsidises tickets through sponsorship and donations. 2027 prices were not published on the check date.
For a date, the film festival and smaller events in the festival fortnight are usually easier than Pride Day itself, when the crowds make it hard to talk.

Community: OTR's Freedom groups and where to look if you're over 25
Not everyone wants to meet people in a bar. OTR, short for Off the Record, describes itself as a mental health social movement by and for young people aged 11 to 25 in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Its registered address is 8-10 West Street in Old Market, and its freephone number is 0808 808 9120.
Its LGBTQIA+ programme, Freedom, is free and open to anyone who is LGBTQIA+ or questioning their gender or sexuality. There are separate groups for 11 to 14, 13 to 18 and 18 to 25 year olds. OTR describes the 18-25 group as a relaxed social space that meets weekly, with optional crafts, games and cooking and occasional trips to theatre, exhibitions and Pride. Groups meet on weekday evenings, and OTR does not publish venues, to protect members' privacy; you sign up online and get details afterwards.
Freedom also supports parents and carers, and OTR is the LGBTQ+ advisory partner for Bristol Hate Crime and Discrimination Services, with a specialist caseworker. If you are over 25, OTR itself points people to the Bristol Pride directory and the Bristol Queer Directory. Bristol Pride also lists trans resources and support among its projects.

Getting home late
Travelwest lists the bus services that run between 11pm and 4am. Several are listed as running Monday to Sunday, including the 24 (Ashton Vale, Bedminster, the centre, Lockleaze and Southmead Hospital), the 48 and 49 to Easton and Fishponds, the 70 to Horfield and UWE Frenchay, the 75 and 76 to Bedminster and Hengrove and the m1 metrobus between Hengrove Park, the centre, UWE Frenchay and Cribbs Causeway. Others, such as the 2, 4 and 6, run late only on Fridays and Saturdays. Travelwest notes that some operators sell a Night Ticket valid from 7pm to 7am.
First's service updates on 14 October 2026 warned of roadworks in the centre, including overnight closures of Victoria Street until 17 October and Park Street and Queens Road on the nights of 19 and 20 October, so check the updates page on the night.
For a taxi, Bristol City Council says hackney carriages are painted Bristol Blue, have a roof sign and can be hailed or taken from a rank, and for trips inside the city boundary you should ask for the meter rather than a fixed fare. Private hire cars come in other colours, show yellow and red plates, and must be booked through a licensed operator. The council suggests checking the driver's badge, sending the vehicle details to a friend and sitting in the back.
Before you go
- Check the venue's own listings on the day: Queenshilling's club nights start at 10pm, and OMG is open Wednesday to Saturday only.
- If one of you uses a wheelchair, ask the venue first; Queenshilling says it has no official toilet access.
- Bristol Pride 2027 dates are set, but tickets, line-up and venue were not published on the check date.
- Look at First's service updates before you set off, because centre roadworks were causing night closures in October 2026.
- Only get into a Bristol Blue hackney or a private hire car you booked, and check the driver's badge.
